The Blues travel to the Hawthorns on Friday evening to face their first challenge since receiving a nine-point deduction from the Football League

West Brom welcome Birmingham City to the Hawthorns in a game that could have massive repercussions at both ends of the table.

Garry Monk's men are suddenly are in a relegation battle after a nine-point deduction was imposed by the Football League for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. The Blues are now in 18th place, just five points clear of safety and on a poor run of form after losing their last four games.

Latest odds

Unsurprisingly, West Brom are favourites to get all three points at home with 3/4 (1.75) available on a Baggies win at bet365.

Birmingham are the outsiders at 10/3 (4.33) whilst the draw is available to back at 11/4 (3.75). The reverse fixture finished 1-1 back in September.

Team news

Kieran Gibbs and Tosin Adarabioyo are both in line for a return to action after a spell on the sidelines for West Brom.

Birmingham only have one doubt, with full-back Maxime Colin unlikely to start this one.

The complexion of this game has been completely changed by the points deduction handed to Birmingham City last week. The Blues now have their backs to the wall and will need a sharp upturn in form if they are to avoid being dragged into a relegation battle.

Garry Monk has often got the best out of his team when playing against top opposition this season, beating Leeds United 2-1 at Elland Road last September and drawing in the reverse fixture against West Brom at St Andrew's. With his team currently in a poor run of form though, it seems unlikely they'll replicate either of those performances.

West Brom are still managerless after sacking Darren Moore earlier this month. James Shan has enjoyed a good spell as caretaker boss so far, winning both of his games, but this could be his last match in charge of the Midlands side with Slavisa Jokanovic and Alex Neil heavily linked to the vacant post.

Prediction and Tips

Birmingham's morale will be low heading into this fixture, having lost each of their last four outings plus the FFP punishment being confirmed. What's more, this is an extremely tough assignment.

As such, West Brom look a very good price at 3/4 (1.75) and that has to be considered the best selection for this one.

The Baggies are coming off the back of two good wins and another three points here would see the team in good spirits heading into the final weeks of the season, and crucially, the play-offs unless they reel in one of the leading pair.

This is the perfect time for any side to be playing Birmingham City and with West Brom being one of the top teams in the division they should get the result here.
