The NFF scribe is sad following the Super Eagles goalkeeper's state of health

Muhammed Sanusi, the Nigeria Football Federation secretary general, has expressed his sadness after Carl Ikeme was diagnosed with acute leukemia.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers man, who last featured for the country against Luxembourg appears unlikely to be available for the crucial Cameroon clash.

Aside praying for his quick recovery, the NFF scribe said the news was not just a major blow to the football family but a 'setback' over his possible further absence in nation's qualifying series.

“This is very sad. Carl Ikeme diagnosed with acute leukemia? This is harsh,” Sanusi told media.

“Our thoughts are with Carl at this difficult period. The NFF and the football fraternity in Nigeria are taken aback by this sad development, knowing how strong Carl has been in goal for Nigeria since he made his debut in 2015.

“We have been told that he will start chemotherapy immediately. We want him to stay strong and remain the self –assured man that he has always been, and we will continue to pray for him and wish him the best with regards to the treatment.”

Having lost 2-0 to South Africa in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, Gernot Rohr need to look for a replacement ahead of the showdown against the Indomitable Lions.
