The Emelec defender fired a low strike in off the post from some 35 yards out, seemingly giving the Ecuadorian side a 3-1 lead over Colombian foe Medellin.
But the goal seemed to catch everyone off guard — from his own team-mate, who was originally lining up the free-kick for himself, to the Medellin players forming a wall when the set piece was taken.
After lengthy protests from Medellin, the goal was disallowed — prompting Emelec players to take their turn swarming the referee.
