Much has been spoken on Thomas Muller’s chances of making it into the starting eleven of Bayern Munich come the start of the 2017-18 season.

With the summer arrivals of Corentin Tolisso and James Rodriguez, and the fact that the German champions already have the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Franck Ribery, Kingsley Coman and Arjen Robben in attack doesn’t leave much space for the World Cup winner Muller.

Before the game against Chelsea, Bayern had suffered back-to-back defeats in China against the likes of Arsenal and AC Milan, the second being a 4-0 hammering in Shenzhen.

Willy Sagnol, who has joined Bayern as Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant this summer, backed Muller to come good this season and was impressed with the work put in by the striker.

“Thomas Muller is a great player and we believe in him. He is working very hard with us in the pre-season. He will surely have a good season and score a lot of goals,” he mentioned.

And the Weilheim-born forward didn’t disappoint his fans in Singapore as he scored a brace in the first half.

He showcased his sharp instincts for his first goal by getting on the end of Ribery’s cross. His second was the pick of the goals as he curled a powerful 25-yard shot beyond Thibaut Courtois and into the top-right corner.

“This is the business of football. One day you score a goal, you are the best, the next day, you are a nobody. I am confident in my abilities and it was good to score two goals,” said the German international in the aftermath of the game when asked if he had proved his detractors wrong.

Bayern next face Inter Milan on Thursday at the National Stadium, Singapore in the International Champions Cup.
