Mokwena helped the Brazilians win the 2016 Caf Champions League, Caf Super Cup and a number of domestic trophies whilst he also helped Pirates finish second last term with Milutin Sredojevic.
Latest media reports suggest that the Soweto giants could part ways with the gifted tactician as the Tshwane side has upped the ante to sign him.
According to TimesLIVE, United have already held discussions with Pirates and could get their preferred candidate should the Sea Robbers agree to release him.
Although Pirates administrator Floyd Mbele refused to comment on the talks, he only said they will make an announcement when the time is right.
SuperSport United have been without a coach since Tinkler resigned last year. Kaitano Tembo has been the club's interim coach.
Moreover, Tembo could work with Rulani as the club looks to hand him a platform similar to the one they gave Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane many seasons ago.
Speaking to TimesLIVE, Mbele said he couldn't comment, but said the club will make an announcement once there is something to announce.
“If I give you a comment then I will be laying credence to what your sources have told you and I do not operate that way,” said Mbele.
“If there is any announcement to be made then we will do it when the time comes,” concluded Mbele.
