SuperSport United secured a hard-fought victory over Chippa United in an encounter which was played at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in the Eastern Cape Province.
Matsatsantsa were the better side in the opening stages of the match and shot-stopper Mbongeni Mzimela was the busier of the two goalkeepers.
The experienced goal-minder made two great saves to deny Aubrey Modiba and Teboho Mokoena, who tried to score with long-range shots.
The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute and it was Mxolisi Macuphu, who scored with a great finish to make it 1-0 to SuperSport after being set-up by Modiba.
The score was 1-0 to SuperSport at the interval following a first half which was dominated by the visitors.
A second half which was dominated by the Chilli Boys followed, but they struggled to create clear-cut chances.
The hosts introduced Rhulani Manzini, who is a striker by trade, as they looked to restore parity.
However, SuperSport coach Kaitano Tembo reacted by introducing defender Bongani Khumalo as the visitors looked to hold onto their slender lead.
SuperSport climbed up to fifth spot on the league standings after securing a 1-0 win over Chippa, who remained 14th on the log.
It took 19 minutes for Rise and Shine to take the lead when Mohammed Anas scored with a beautiful strike to make it 1-0 to Polokwane.
Bakgaga tried to respond with a goal, but Rise and Shine stood firm at the back, and they led 1-0 at the interval.
Polokwane City doubled their lead just eight minutes into second half when Salulani Phiri hit the back of the net making it 2-0.
The hosts then suffered a big blow five minutes before the hour-mark when Bonginkosi Makume was sent off and Baroka were reduced to 10 players.
However, Baroka managed to pull one back through Collins Makgaka, who netted in the 63rd minute with Mduduzi Mndatsane grabbing an assist.
The visitors then took advantage of their numerical superiority over Baroka when Anas grabbed his brace to make it 3-1 to Polokwane City in the 80th minute - sealing a win for the visitors in the process.
The 3-1 victory took Polokwane to seventh spot on the league standings while Baroka remained 13th on the table.
