A second-half penalty to Sydney FC has left Central Coast Mariners coach Mike Mulvey enraged as he demanded for VAR intervention.

Having just equalised against a 10-man Mariners, the Sky Blues were awarded a spot kick in the 52nd minute with Jacob Melling adjudged to have taken out Adam Le Fondre.

Replays suggested Melling did make contact with the ball, though whether he collected Le Fondre first remained under some doubt and the VAR didn't intervene.

The penalty call saw Le Fondre fire Sydney FC in front and they never turned back as they ran out 5-2 winners.

For Mulvey, who is yet to win with the Mariners, the decision and lack of VAR intervention left him fuming.

"Let’s just talk about the penalty," Mulvey told Fox Sports post-game.

"Seriously, VAR, come on."

Though clearly unhappy about the decision and result, Mulvey stressed his side played well in the first-half and were always going to struggle after the sending off of Kalifa Cisse in the first-half.

"When you play against a Sydney FC team with a glittering heirachy, good quality footballers, and we’re playing with ten men it’s very difficult and we got found out," he said.

Without a win in 315 days, the Mariners coach confirmed January will be a busy one for the club as they look to bring in some reinforcements.

"Watch this space," he said.

"We have not been sitting on our hands."
