George Weah is the only African footballer to have won both Fifa World Player of the Year and the prestigious Ballon D'Or

Sam Nyamweya has congratulated former African powerhouse George Weah for being elected the new Liberia President.

With nearly all ballots from Tuesday's run-off vote counted, the former football star is well ahead of opponent Joseph Boakai with more than 60% of the vote. As news of Weah's victory emerged, his supporters began celebrating in the capital Monrovia.

He will succeed Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, in Liberia's first democratic handover in decades.

The former Football Kenya Federation President Nyamweya said in a signed statement obtained by Goal, ”I take great pleasure in congratulating the new Liberia President elect George Opong' Weah.

“Mr. Weah has made history on becoming the first footballer to be elected president in Africa. Personally I have been close with George Weah during my time as the Secretary General of the Kenya Football Federation and later as President of the Football Kenya Federation.

“George Weah has over the time proved himself as a great ambassador of world football and has put African football on the map. History has been part of Weah, he remains the only African footballer to have been crowned the World and African Footballer of the year at the same time.

“In winning the Liberia presidency, Weah has broken into new territory by becoming the first footballer to be elected president. Mr. Weah, congratulations, and make Liberia great.”

Mr Weah, who was raised in a slum in Liberia's capital Monrovia, starred at top-flight European football clubs Paris St-Germain (PSG) and AC Milan, before ending his career in England with brief stays at Chelsea and Manchester City.

He is the only African footballer to have won both Fifa World Player of the Year and the prestigious Ballon D'Or.
