Sundowns need three points out of a possible six in their remaining games to be crowned PSL champions. Goal takes a look at the permutations

The Premier Soccer League could have new league champions on Saturday.

It is now common knowledge that the title race is between Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, but the Soweto giants will need Ajax Cape Town to do them a huge favour to stay in the race.

As things stand, Sundowns are four points clear of second-placed Pirates at the top of the PSL log, and they look set to win their eighth league title since the 1996/97 season, and their third in the last five years.

But there are a few permutations that need to be taken into consideration for them to be able to lay their hands on the trophy.

With two league games to go for both Sundowns and Pirates, Micho Sredojevic's men are now relying on other teams to keep their title hopes alive.

If Sundowns beat Ajax Cape Town in Tshwane then Pitso Mosimane's charges will be crowned champions even if Pirates win away to Cape Town City on the same day.

A draw would still be enough for the Brazilians to wrap up the title if Bucs fail to get the three points against Benni McCarthy's side.

While the issue of goal difference will only come to the fore if and when both sides have equal number of points, it is worth noting that the 2016 African champions are way ahead of Pirates.

Having scored 46 and conceded 23, Sundowns are sitting on +23 goal difference, while Pirates are on +15 goal difference following their 4-0 win over Bidvest Wits on Wednesday, meaning there's an eight-goal gap between them and their rivals.

Sundowns would still win the league even if they lose provided Pirates lose as well.
