Betting: Liverpool back in front to sign in-demand Van Dijk

The Southampton star remains one of the most sought-after centre-backs on the market as we assess Anfield as a possible destination next season

One of the most curious moments of the summer transfer window came last month, when Liverpool were forced to make a public apology over their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk.

The Merseysiders were reported to the Premier League by Van Dijk's club Southampton for alleged tapping-up and contained within their apology was a line about the club having dropped their interest in the player.

Now it seems Van Dijk is back in Liverpool's sights and with the side crying out for a centre-back, manager Jurgen Klopp will perhaps be hoping that the furore from last month has calmed down sufficiently to launch a formal bid for the player.

Betfair offer Liverpool at 9/10 (1.90) to be the Dutch defender's club on 1st September, and there is of course a long line of players who have made the switch from the south coast to Anfield. Southampton, meanwhile, have insisted that the player is not for sale, and they are offered at 6/5 (2.20) to retain the services of the 25-year-old after the summer transfer window.

Nevertheless, should the Saints receive a big enough offer there would no doubt be a temptation to cash in on the player, and while Liverpool look like the front runners, there are other teams interested in the Netherlands international.

Premier League champions Chelsea are looking to bolster their defence and have also been linked with a move for Van Dyk. The problem for the Blues is that the player himself is reportedly more keen on a move to Liverpool, although Southampton might be more inclined to do business with Chelsea rather than the Merseysiders given what has already gone on this summer.

Chelsea can be backed at 9/2 (4.50) to be Van Dijk's next destination, while there is then a significant jump in the better to Everton at 14/1 (15.00) and Barcelona at 25/1 (26.00).
