Pochettino airs Tottenham, Argentina & Serie A dreams

Mauricio Pochettino dreams of winning a trophy in Tottenham’s new stadium as he remains committed to a long-term contract, but also has ambitions in Italy and Argentina.

The 46-year-old has been in English football since taking the reins at Southampton in 2013.

Success on the south coast led him to north London and he is now one of the most sought-after coaches in world football, with Real Madrid rumours seemingly never far away.

Pochettino has never sought to secure a switch elsewhere, though, and having signed a new deal with Spurs in May, is determined to deliver tangible success in his current post before moving on.

He told Gazzetta dello Sport: “My contract expires in four-and-a-half years –  if [Spurs chairman Daniel] Levy does not fire me first!

“Seriously, today I see myself here. I dream of winning a trophy with Tottenham, maybe the Premier League in our new stadium.”

Pochettino’s career path is likely to lead him elsewhere at some stage, with the South American making no secret of his desire to manage his homeland and take on another challenge in Europe – having already worked in La Liga and the Premier League.

He said: “In the future to also manage the Argentine team is my desire.

“The important thing is to be happy and I am right now. Me in Serie A? I have Italian origins and it would be a wonderful experience.”

Pochettino added: “Argentines and Italians are very similar, for the way we live life and for our passion for football. Clearly [to work in Italy] I would need to have a better grasp of Italian, as language is fundamental to communicate with players.

“I remember that my grandfather would speak to me quite often in Italian but I was quite young. I'd need to do a bit of practice before moving to Italy.

“Years ago there were contacts with Sampdoria. I was at Espanyol, they showed an interest but then nothing happened.”

Pochettino will be testing his coaching credentials against Italian opposition on Wednesday, with Tottenham’s latest Champions League outing set to see them welcome Inter to Wembley.
