Okumu had been reinstated into the starting line up by coach Serame Letsoaka due the suspension of regular starter Thamsanqa Teyise for the Nedbank Cup Last-16 tie played at the James Motlatsi Stadium in Orkney. The same venue Ea Lla Koto handed the Buccaneers a 3-2 loss in a Premier Soccer League match last weekend.
But it was a night to forget for the 19-year-old though as he was numerously tortured by South African international Mpho Makola. And despite Stars enjoying a strong opening, Makola’s rocket from 25-yards out opened the scoring for the visitors in the 20th minute.
But Stars equalized courtesy of Sifiso Mbhele’s 40th minute header to send the sides deadlocked to the interval. Makola, again, whipped in a cross from the left flank early in the second half which forced Okumu into an unfortunate own goal early in the second half to restore Pirates’ lead.
Stars would soon be reduced to ten man and Pirates added two other goals from Oupa Manyisa and Thembinkosi Lorch. Stars will next take on PSL strugglers Baroka FC in a league match scheduled for the 11th of April.
