Fans have certainly not been all too pleased with the way Chiefs have performed in the Derby.
The last time these two sides met, it was in the league and once again Pirates showed that they had their rival’s number. This will be worrying for Amakhosi, especially when considered what lies in the balance.
It has been three years since Chiefs last achieved any silverware and coach Giovanni Solinas will know that nothing will endear him to the fans more than a Cup final berth at the expense of the Buccaneers.
But the question on everyone’s mind will be if Chiefs can overcome Pirates?
Over the years both sides have been in decline and are seen as ‘sleeping giants’ of South African football.
However, over recent times, there seems to be a change in the tide.
A change in mindset and hunger particularly on the side of Pirates, while Chiefs are yet to reaffirm their status as one of the PSL’s giants.
Nonetheless, Chiefs’ lack of success in this fixture comes down to them showing the opposition too much of respect. Against a team like Pirates, the Glamour Boys need to show a sense of arrogance, swagger and a killer instinct. That was missing in the league fixture.
After taking the lead, the Chiefs of old would grow in confidence and play to the crowd. But Chiefs do not seem to be able to do that anymore. Rather when they are ahead nerves seem to creep in as they look uncomfortable in that position.
If Chiefs are to overcome Pirates, they can no longer afford to fall prey to their own demons. It is important that they take the game by the scruff of the neck, that is why it is important that head coach Giovanni Solinas looks to his more experienced campaigners.
Players such as Willard Katsande, Bernard Parker and Khama Billiat may hold the key. All three of those players are used to playing in big games and are able to guide the more inexperienced players such as Siyabonga Ngezana.
A player like Katsande also needs to lead by example. His exploits in the heart of the midfield will be needed as Chiefs need someone who will not shy away from a tackle and assert their authority on game.
Also, with Billiat set to experience his second Soweto Derby since joining, the stage is set for a big performance from him.
One of the biggest contributors to Chiefs’ decline in recent years has been the apparent lack of match winners in the team. But with Billiat and Lebogang Manyama, who is available for the clash following his unfortunate car accident, Chiefs have big players for the big occasions.
A derby is often settled by a moment of brilliance and having the likes of Billiat and Manyama only increases the probability of that happening.
But worrying for Chiefs is the fact that Pirates too have several match winners, making this an intriguing affair which could mean that the clash will go the way of the team who wants victory more.
