The 23-year-old, who graduated from Chievo's junior side in 2013, was on loan at Albanian giants Partizani Tirana last campaign.
Ekuban netted 17 goals as his side finished second in the local top-flight. His performance also in the Uefa Champions League and Europa League qualifying stages did not go unnoticed, as Leeds scouts recommended him to head coach Thomas Christiansen, who is reported to have had his official bid accepted by Chievo.
Ekuban is expected to arrive at the Elland Road within the week for his medical.
Leeds have successfully signed former Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid midfielder Samuel Saiz from SD Huesca and are left with one striker to be added to the setup before they travel to Australia for a pre-season tour.
Aside Partizani, Ekuban has had loan stints with Sudtirol, Lumezzane and Renate within the past three seasons.
He will become the second player of Ghanaian origin at Leeds aside youth star Samuel Amissah should the move go through successfully.
