Is the Soweto Derby Steve Komphela's chance to win Kaizer Chiefs fans?

Komphela is yet to register a win over Pirates in competitive matches since joining Chiefs, and that doesn't sit well with Amakhosi fans

Steve Komphela has been judged purely on the two seasons he failed to win silverware with Kaizer Chiefs, but his team hasn't been too bad this term, and calls for him to vacate his position are a bit unfair at this stage.

Tuesday's performance against Mamelodi Sundowns gave Amakhosi fans a taste of what the team is capable of achieving this season, but Komphela still needs to win the club fans with positive results over the next few months.

The fact that Chiefs beat Sundowns will count for nothing if they lose to Orlando Pirates in the Soweto Derby this coming weekend, and it is for that reason Komphela has to silence his critics by winning on Saturday.

Holding the coaching position at Chiefs comes with its pressure, and apart from winning trophies, one needs to beat Pirates to appease the hard-to-please Amakhosi fans.

As things stand, Chiefs fans are divided on whether or not Komphela is the right man for the job, but those questioning the management's decision to back him could be made to swallow their words, especially now that the team is up there on the PSL standings.

Playing for a draw is certainly not an option for Komphela, more so as this would cripple their confidence going into the final games of the year.

It's also worth noting that Komphela is yet to win an official Soweto Derby match since taking over from Stuart Baxter - he has managed just four draws in six matches and two defeats, which is simply not good enough.

Winning against Pirates will not only win those Chiefs fans who continue to criticise him and his coaching style, but it will go a long way in ensuring that he stays on as manager for months to come.

Of course this fixture will not determine his fate, but if he cannot beat the big boys in the league, then chances of him winning his first piece of silverware are very slim.

Pirates are still trying to find their feet under Milutin Sredojevic, and the Serbian mentor has less pressure to deal with going into this encounter, and whether or not he beats Chiefs, the spotlight will still be on Komphela after the final whistle.

Injury crisis or not, Komphela proved to many of us that Chiefs can play and win matches without many of their star players, and missing a few key members of the squad shouldn't be an excuse for him not to win at the Calabash.
