South Africa have decided to pull out from the 2018 Intercontinental Cup, to be organised by All India Football Federation (AIFF) in Mumbai from June 1, 2018. However, the AIFF has acted swiftly to find a replacement in the form of KenyaGoal can confirm.

New Zealand and Chinese Taipei are the other two participating teams in the four-nation tournament. All matches of the tournament will be held at the Mumbai Football Arena and the AIFF intends to make the competition an annual fixture in the Indian footballing calendar.

This tournament is expected to provide the Indian football team some much-needed game time before the AFC Asian Cup to be held in UAE in January 2019. This also paves the way for head coach Stephen Constantine to experiment with the team combination and find his best XI.

The AIFF has also assured that the three other sides in the competition will be sending their first team squads to India.

“The concept of the Hero Intercontinental Cup is to test our team against strong oppositions from other continents. As we approach the Asian Cup, it’s pertinent that we play against tougher teams. I need to thank our marketing partners Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) for playing an active part in planning this out,” said AIFF General Secretary Kushal Das while announcing the tournament.

“As all the first teams would be competing, it will be a football fest for the fans in Mumbai. The commercial capital is a sporting city and the support from the Indian Football fans has been outstanding in recent times. I look forward to a successful organisation of the tournament,” he added.
