Ghana president Akufo-Addo leads Weah congratulatory posts

Ghana President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sent words of felicitations to 1995 Fifa Player of the Year, George Weah, on winning Liberia's presidential elections.

Reports say the former AC Milan striker is all but the victor of Tuesday's run-off, as he currently leads incumbent vice-president Joseph Boakai with more than 60 per cent of the votes.

Official confirmation of the result is expected in the coming hours.

"Warm congratulations to George Oppong Weah on his decisive victory in Liberia’s peaceful presidential run-off, thus becoming the next President of the Republic Liberia," Akufo-Addo wrote on via his official Facebook account.

"Vice President Boakai is also to be commended for the maturity of his campaign.

"This election has strengthened the frontiers of democracy in Liberia, and it is our hope that it will lead to the improvement of the living standards of Liberians.

"Best wishes for the success of President-elect George Weah, and Vice President-elect, Jewel Taylor."

It is the former AC Milan man's second time of running for Liberia's top office, having lost to current president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in 2005.

He is set to succeed Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female president, in what will be Liberia's first democratic handover in decades.
