According to Goal Indonesia, PBFC president Husein Said Amin said: “We have officially signed Shane Smeltz as a marquee player. On Monday (April 10), he joined the rest of team.”

“He is a striker who we need at the club. We need him to team up with our striker Lerby Eliandry and Shane is a perfert match for Lerby.”

For Smeltz, he explained that he moved to a new club is because he wants to keep playing in order to get a chance to play for New Zealand in the World Cup Qualification round.

“Opportunities come fast in football. Before this my focus was with Phoenix and if we managed to get to the play-offs, I would’ve stayed with them.”

“With my age right now, I can’t lose my fitness and drop my performance level. New Zealand is still competing in the World Cup qualification and Confederation Cup so I have to play at the top level at all times,” added Smeltz.

Smeltz played for Kedah in 2016, joining the team in July and helping the Red Eagles win the Malaysia Cup, before he left for Wellington Phoenix in December 2016.
