Fernando may have left Manchester City prior to their record-breaking efforts in 2017-18, but the Brazilian is hoping to see the Blues continue to flourish without him.

On the back of a trophyless debut campaign in English football, Pep Guardiola set about righting those wrongs last summer by undertaking an elaborate rebuilding project.

Big money was invested in fresh faces, meaning that certain squad players were allowed to head for the exits.

Fernando was among those moved on, as he linked up with Turkish side Galatasaray, but the 30-year-old midfielder has kept a close eye on events at the Etihad Stadium and is delighted to have seen a side with a strong South American contingent collect a Premier League and Carabao Cup double.

He told Goal on the exploits of a team which reached 100 points in English top-flight competition: “I'm really happy that they won the title. Some of my friends are there - Gabriel Jesus, Danilo, Fernandinho is like a brother to me.

“Pep Guardiola is one of the best coaches in football. They deserve every success so I hope they keep getting it.”

Fernando made just 15 Premier League appearances for City during Guardiola’s first season at the helm, with other options favoured as a new philosophy of football was introduced.

The experience served an experienced performer well, though, and allowed him to enhance a CV which has seen him work under the likes of Jesualdo Ferreira, Andre Villas-Boas and Paulo Fonseca.

He is now benefitting from the tactical wisdom of Galatasaray legend Fatih Terim, with the iconic coach – who is taking in a fourth spell with the Istanbul giants - considered to be among the very best in the business.

“The biggest effect Fatih Terim has on me is that his calm attitude, tactical moves and his intelligence during big games,” said Fernando.

“He's a charismatic coach. He makes you feel his trust. I have worked with many coaches but Fatih Terim is the best in terms of making you feel confident.”

Terim helped Fernando and Co to the Super Lig title in 2017-18, with Gala edging out Fenerbahce and Istanbul Basaksehir by three points.

With domestic matters out of the way, attention is now starting to shift towards World Cup action in Russia.

Fernando is hoping to see Brazil capture a sixth global crown this summer, but also wants to Portugal to do well having previously enjoyed seven productive years at Porto.

He added: “I hope the final will be between Brazil and Portugal. And I hope Brazil wins it.”

Portugal have been placed in Group B at World Cup 2018 alongside Spain, Morocco and Iran, while Brazil will face Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia in Group E.
