David Luiz's Chelsea future still up in the air after Manchester City heroics

After being offered a one-year contract extension by Chelsea, David Luiz has admitted discussions with the club he loves are ongoing.

The 31-year-old defender was key in the Blues' 2-0 upset over Manchester City at the weekend as he helped keep a clean sheet and scored late in the game.

Chelsea generally only offer one-year extensions to players over 30 with Luiz seemingly no exception as he takes his time deciding what his next move will be.

“I am just trying to enjoy myself, like I do every single day,” Luiz said.

“Then, for sure, we will do the best thing for me, for Chelsea, for everybody. We are still talking, let’s see. Let’s see what the future brings.

“I love this club, everybody knows I want to stay."

Luiz has been the subject of criticism this season after a few shaky performances for the Blues but admitted he's more than happy to receive it.

Up against a City side without Kevin De Bruyne or Sergio Aguero, Luiz looked a lot more comfortable in defence, yet revealed he would have preferred to have Aguero in the line-up rather than a free-roaming Raheem Sterling.

“It’s better when you have a reference than without," he said.

"It’s always more difficult when you don’t have a reference. But it’s not just about one player."

Chelsea's win moved them up to fourth in the Premier League, while at the same time knocked Pep Guardiola's side from the summit. Luiz is hopeful the result will have a ripple effect.

"I hope we hurt them and we can move up the table and be closer to them," he said.

“At the moment they are the best team in the world, more than three years together.

"It is never easy to play against them, but I think we had the right humility and right plan to win the game."
