The Round of 16 in the Copa Libertadores gets underway on Tuesday. In the first game of the round, C.S. Emelec will take on Atletico-MG, also known as Atletico Mineiro.
This match will be played in Ecuador, while the second leg of the contest will take place on July 5 in Brazil.

Emelec qualified for the Copa Libertadores by virtue of being the runners up in Ecuador’s Serie A in 2021. The 14-time national champions are looking to be just the second Ecuadorian team to win this tournament, with the other being LDU Quito in 2008.
In the group stage, Emelec finished second behind Palmeiras with two wins, two draws and two losses.
The team scored 14 goals in the group stage, with half of those coming in their final match, a 7-0 win over Independiente Petrolero. Alejando Cabeza and Sebastian Rodríguez each netted two goals in the victory.

Atletico-MG are one of the many Brazilian teams in this tournament. The 2021 Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A champs are one of six teams left in the running. Mineiro have won this tournament once, taking the title in 2013.
In the group stage, Mineiro won their group, finishing with three wins, two draws and one loss, the same record as Deportes Tolima. Mineiro won the tiebreaker on goal differential.
Mineiro closed the group stage with a 2-1 loss to Deportes Tolima. Eduardo Sasha scored a late goal to equalize but Mineiro quickly surrendered another goal. Outside of Copa Libertadores play, the team is coming off a domestic win over Fortaleza.
