Copa Coca Cola Akure regionals finals Wrap

The Modakeke boys will represent the Akure region at the national finals after beating their counterparts from Kogi 1-0 on Saturday evening

Osun 1-0 Kogi

Adedeji Damilare’s superbly taken freekick in the first half sealed the 2017 Copa Coca Cola national finals ticket for Progress Comprehensive High School, Osun at the Aquinas College, Akure on Saturday evening.

The Boys from Modakeke wrapped up their campaign at the regional level with a 1-0 victory over Government Day Secondary School to finish top of the table with 10 points after four matches.

Having kick started their campaign with a slim victory over Niger College, Edo on Thursday, they were forced to a 1-1 draw by Brightville College, Oyo the following day, which almost their chances of going through into jeopardy.

But then they never allowed that result determine their destiny as they returned to the center stage on Saturday to brush  Urhobo College 2-0 before claiming the only ticket available in that region with a 1-0 win over their Kogi counterparts.

Although, the boys from GDSS gave a good account of themselves but their efforts weren’t perfect in front of goal, as most of the chances they created went few inches off the post.


Kogi 0-3 Edo

Niger College, Edo wrapped up their regional finals campaign on Saturday morning with a 3-0 victory over Government Day Secondary Scool, Kogi.

Salami Jeremiah’s brace and Eloghosa Amawu’s goal ensured the boys from Benin finished with nine points after four games – a result they thought would have landed them in Lagos for the national finals.

But unfortunately, the game they lost on the first day came back to haunt them, as they failed to reach the national finals after finishing second on the log with just one point behind the eventual champions from the region, Progress Conprehensive high School from Osun on the last day of the competition at the Aquinas College, Akure.

Ogieriakhi Austin’s boys also scored the highest number of goals at the Akure region – 13 goals and conceded just one. They also kept three clean sheets after the tourney.


Oyo 3-0 Delta

Brightville College, Oyo eventually claim their first victory at the region on Saturday after beating the whipping boys from Urhobo College, Delta 3-0 in a game that was concluded in the first half following an injury complain from the Delta delegation.

Goals from Akinbiyi Sodiq, Oladapo Matthew and Olawale Wasiu gave the Ibadan boys their first win in the competition as they finished third on the table with five points at the Aquinas College, Akure.

Akinbiyi Sodiq opened scoring for Brightville in the first half through a well-orchestrated set-piece, while Oladapo Matthew and Olawale Wasiu completed the score line in the first half to hand them their first maximum point in the tourney.


Delta 0-2 Osun

Progress Comprehensive College, Osun compounded the woes of Urhobo College, Delta side in their third encounter of the tourney, as the Modakeke boys claimed a 2-0 win over their Niger-Delta representatives on Saturday.

Akinlabi Marvellous and Ojo Sunday were the goals scorers in that encounter, which boosted the chances of their state from representing the Akure region at the national finals.

The boys from Modakeke are the only team that did not suffer defeat at the Akure region – winning three out of the four games played, and drew their last game, while the Delta boys were the whipping boys of the region, losing all of their games, and conceded 18 goals across the three days of action.
