Mohun Bagan edged past George Telegraph 1-0 in their third match of Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division ‘A’ on Sunday at the Mohun Bagan Ground.
A 72nd-minute strike from Aser Pierrick Dipanda sealed full points for the Green and Maroons. Credit must also be given to goalkeeper Sankar Roy who made two stellar saves in the last five minutes of regulation time to keep the scoreline intact.
Mohun Bagan coach Sankarlal Chakraborty refused to believe that his team is showing inconsistency on the pitch. He said, “My team is not inconsistent. The opponent had done their homework and had come rehearsed. They tried to close down the gaps by fielding nine players in midfield. It was becoming difficult to break them down. Therefore in the second-half, we shifted from a back three to a back four and after making the change in the formation we started to gain more control.”
Sankarlal had continued to experiment by fielding a back three and deploying Arijit Bagui and Abhishek Ambekar as wings backs. But the players failed to make an impact on the flanks.
Defending his full-backs, Chakraborty suggested, “Their wingers and side backs were constantly pressing Bagui and Ambekar. Therefore our wingers could not operate freely. At halftime, I decided to shift to a back four.”
When asked if Sankarlal was worried about the performance of his central midfielder and if he would start Mehtab and Tirthankar from the beginning in the next match, he replied, “I am not worried about midfield. They are young players. They will improve. But I will not give a start to either Mehtab or Tirthankar.”
On Dipanda’s performance, Sankarlal said, “Dipanda needs to get fitter. He will gain match fitness by playing matches. There was no time to do pre-season separately for him.”
