Caf resolve to renegotiate 12-year contract with Lagerdere

Caf has resolved to renegotiate their contract with French media firm Lagardere Sports.

The commercial partnership, sealed during the previous Caf regime led by Issa Hayatou, is worth $1 billion.

The contract saw Lagardere securing media and marketing rights for all Caf tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and Champions League.

When current Caf president Ahmed was elected into office last year, he promised to review the deal.

But the possibility of running into a legal minefield has seen Caf adopt a cautious approach in dealing with the contract.

“Contract with Lagerdere Sports to be renegotiated before the end of the year, with Caf seeking to increase its income to support its developmental agenda,” read one of the resolutions of the 12th Caf Extraordinary General Assembly last weekend.

The Congress also resolved to endorse Fifa president Gianni Infantino’s candidacy when he seeks re-election next year.

Infantino who was elected as Fifa president in 2016 is bidding for another term ahead of the elections to be held in Paris next June.

“I profoundly announce that Caf will support (Gianni) Infantino for another term,” Caf president Ahmad told delegates at the general assembly in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm El Sheikh, with Infantino accepting Caf’s backing saying, “The support for another term means a lot to me.”
