Ahmad on rumours Morocco and South Africa is Plan B for Cameroon's Afcon

Confederation of African Football (Caf) president Ahmad has watered down rumours that 2019 Afcon hosting rights would be taken away from Cameroon.

The central African country’s capacity to successfully host an expanded 24-team tournament has come under scrutiny after they were initially handed rights to organise the tournament with 16 teams in 2014.

With massive infrastructural upgrades needed to handle a 24-team Afcon, Cameroon are only left with 10 months before staging the rescheduled June/July tournament.

Speculation that Afcon could be moved elsewhere has also heightened, with Morocco or South Africa being touted as possible replacements.

An inspection team led by Caf deputy secretary general Anthony Baffoe is currently in Cameroon assessing progress made so far in readying for the tournament.

A report by the inspection team is expected to be announced at next month’s Caf congress where Cameroon’s hosting fate would be concluded.

Camfoot reported Ahmad commenting on rumours that the central Africans would lose rights to organise the tournament, saying no country has been tasked to replace Cameroon.

This is after the Caf boss had recently declined to discuss the 2019 Afcon hosting issue.

“But until proven otherwise, I tell you, the Africa Cup of Nations is in Cameroon," Ahmad was quoted as saying by Camfoot.

"People talk about what they want.  For us, that's it, there is no Plan B so far. Let's be satisfied with that.”

Having hosted the eight-team 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations, Cameroon could be confident of their stadia, training facilities and accommodation infrastructure as well as transport networks.
