Allan Wanga is the only player, who has come close to challenge the record, notching in 23 league goals in his debut season

Former international Boniface Ambani has now offered to give out a football to strikers, who will score a hat-trick in KPL this season.

In a move aimed at boosting standards of the local league, Ambani, who won the Golden Boot Award in 2006 season with 26 goals while turning out for Tusker, says he wants to motivate the strikers to score as many goals as possible.

“I have tried to watch some of the matches and the strikers’ approach is wanting. The teams tend to concentrate on the defensive aspect so much. Once they score one goal they sit back to defend that one goal. The strikers start wasting time.

“I want to see more action upfront from both ends. I want to see a player scoring a goal and looking for a second and hence the hat-trick. Their approach will actually change to the better with such motivations," Ambani told Goal.

Ambani will start the initiative by rewarding Nzoia Sugar ace Elvins Rupia and Gor Mahia striker Meddie Kagere for their hat-trick efforts so far this season.

Ambani enjoys the long standing record of 26 goals scored in a single season. He shares the feat with ex-Gor Mahia great, Maurice ‘Sonyi’ Ochieng, who equally plundered 26 goals in the historic 1976 season when K’Ogalo won the league title unbeaten for the first time, under Allan Thigo, as player cum coach.

Former Tusker and AFC Leopards striker Allan Wanga is the only player, who has come close to challenge the record, notching in 23 league goals in his debut season in KPL, in 2007, while turning out for the Ruaraka - based side.
