The Italian maestro is considering coming out of retirement for a short stint

World Cup winner Andrea Pirlo is reportedly in advanced talks with Australian semi-professional side Avondale FC to come out of retirement for a one-off appearance.

The 39-year-old Italian last played for New York City in 2017 after a distinguished career in the Serie A for AC Milan and Juventus.

Fox Sports however claim that Avondale, a Victorian side set to play Sydney FC in the FFA Cup quarter-finals, are close to convincing Pirlo to pull on the boots one more time for the clash.

Avondale finished the Victorian Premier League season in third and sealed their place in the FFA Cup quarter-finals after beating Devonport 4-1 in the Round of 16.

The club are also through to the National Premier League semi-finals after beating Port Melbourne 3-1 over the weekend.

They'll play reigning FFA Cup champions Sydney FC at ABD Stadium on Wednesday September 19 with all eyes now on whether Pirlo will indeed make a surprise appearance.

Pirlo most recently played three seasons in the MLS for New York with his last professional game taking place in November last year.

Should he temporarily play in Australia, he'd follow in the footsteps of fellow Juventus legend Alessandro De Piero, who spent two seasons with Sydney FC.

Avondale have reportedly been keen to land a guest marquee for some time and have identified Pirlo as a perfect target with money seen as no issue.
