All of Sunday's PSL action preview: Wits look to build on their recent success, while SuperSport and Baroka go in search of much-needed respite

An exciting Premier Soccer League (PSL) weekend continues on Sunday afternoon with three enthralling clashes.

In the pick of Sunday’s action, all eyes will fall on Port Elizabeth where Bidvest Wits will travel to take on a confident Chippa United. Victory for the away side will see them move out of the relegation zone following their win against SuperSport in midweek and will give coach Gavin Hunt some much-needed respite.

However, as far as domestic football goes, there isn’t many more difficult encounters than an away trip against the Chilli Boys. Under coach Teboho Moloi, Chippa have been transformed into a technically astute and an exciting outfit. They currently find themselves in eighth place on the log but could potentially move into the top four should results elsewhere go their way.

Chippa though will need to be wary with Wits’ only absentee expected to be Bongani Khumalo who is serving a suspension. But with the likes of new signings Edwin Gyimah and Lehlohonolo Majoro looking good, Wits are a team on the rise. Wits could also receive a welcome boost ahead of the clash if another January signing in Denis Weidlich receives his work permit in time.

Meanwhile, on the side of Chippa, the spotlight will once again fall on Thabo Rakhale. Since making his move from Orlando Pirates much has been expected of the skilful playmaker and after debuting in the 2-0 win over AmaZulu, he again will be expected to shine alongside the dangerous Kurt Lentjies.

Historically speaking, the clash is expected to be a tightly fought contest, considering that out of the previous nine meetings between the two sides, four games have ended in draw with Wits winning three and losing two.

Elsewhere on Sunday, SuperSport United will be desperate to return to winning ways after their midweek disaster against the Clever Boys. Matsatsantsa are without a win in their last seven league encounters, but with a clash against a struggling Golden Arrows on the cards, Eric Tinkler might favour his troops’ chances.

Arrows may have started the season like a house on fire but their flame has been extinguished somewhat of late. Abafana Bes’thende are currently the league’s ‘draw kings’ as they have drawn nine of their 16 games. But with all to play for against SuperSport and with a few more days of rest compared to the Tshwane-based outfit together with so much uncertainty surrounding SuperSport’s star striker Jeremy Brockie, they too will be optimistic.

Lastly in Limpopo, Baroka will look to get their season back on track as they host AmaZulu. Both teams go into the clash off the back of recent defeats, and with both sides in danger of falling down the PSL ladder, victory will be essential.

Baroka will be without Letladi Madubanya. The 33-year-old is an influential figure in the heart of the midfield but despite his absence Bakgaga will certainly favour their chances, knowing that they have never lost to the Durban-based outfit. A rather closely fought encounter is predicted though as the previous meeting between the two sides ended in  a 1-1 draw in November of 2017.
