SuperSport United 2-1 TS Galaxy: Ex-Orlando Pirates star Gabuza continues scoring form

Thamsanqa Gabuza, SuperSport United, November 2021
The 34-year-old frontman, who is playing some of his best football at the moment, collected his second successive Man of the Match award

Thamsanqa Gabuza was on the score sheet as SuperSport United claimed a 2-1 victory over TS Galaxy in a PSL match at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.

Second-half goals from Gabuza and Sipho Mbule earned Matsatsantsa the victory as the Tshwane giants fought back after the in-form Sinethemba Mngomezulu had handed the Rockets a surprise lead.

Last season's PSL Golden Boot award winner Bradley Grobler was recalled to the starting line-up by coach Kaitano Tembo as SuperSport looked to return to winning ways after succumbing to a 2-1 defeat to Royal AM on Tuesday.

On the other hand, Menzi Ndwandwe was handed a starting berth by coach Sead Ramovic after he came off the bench to score the winning goal against Baroka FC on Wednesday claiming their first win of the season in the process.

Galaxy knew that they had to keep a close eye on Gabuza, who has been in good form in front of goal in recent weeks having netted against Royal AM to take his tally to four league goals in the current campaign.

The former Orlando Pirates centre forward had a chance to break the deadlock after he timed his run into the visitors' box very well, but he placed Guilly Manziba's cut-back pass over the crossbar from close range.

Matsatsantsa were controlling the match with Jamie Webber pulling the strings and the creative midfielder set up Manziba, who volleyed the ball over the crossbar as the hosts continued to waste their chances.

The score was 0-0 at half-time and Ramovic decided against making changes at half-time despite his side having been dominated by SuperSport in the first-half.

The Rockets looked dangerous on the counter-attack after the restart and they opened the scoring through Mngomezulu, who netted with a lovely finish to hand Galaxy a 1-0 lead in the 62nd minute and it was his second goal in as many games.

However, the goal did not deter Matsatsantsa as they exerted more pressure on the visitors and Tembo's side was awarded a penalty after the troublesome Gabuza was fouled in the box by tough-tackling Igor Makitan.

Gabuza dusted himself down and converted the penalty kick - beating goalkeeper Vasilije Kolak to make it 1-1 in the 72nd minute and the hosts then pushed the winning goal which they got three minutes later.

This time Sipho Mbule was the goalscorer as the Bafana Bafana international fired past Bosnia-Herzegovina shot-stopper Kolak hands down with a snapshot to hand SuperSport a well-deserved 2-1 lead after the Galaxy defence was exposed.

The goal proved to be a winning goal for SuperSport, who emerged as 2-1 winners on the night and the victory took them to third place on the league standings, while Galaxy remained 15th on the log heading into the Fifa international break.
