After an impressive away win in Imphal against NEROCA FC, Alejandro Menendez’s East Bengal travel to Meghalaya to take on Shillong Lajong FC in their second match of I-League 2018/19 on Thursday.

The Red and Golds will be high on confidence after the 2-0 win over last season’s runners-up where their newly recruited Mexican forward Enrique Esqueda scored a brace.

Even though the Red and Golds did not enjoy a lion’s share of possession in the game, they did enough to collect important three points in their opening fixture.

The Spanish manager took the gamble of fielding only three foreigners in the starting XI which paid off. Three academy graduates, Yami Longvah, Manoj Mohammed and Bidyasagar Singh were fielded against NEROCA which is definitely a positive sign.

Shillong Lajong vs Aizawl I-League 2018-19

Syrian midfield maestro Mahmoud Al Amna had travelled with the team in Imphal but did not make the matchday squad after a back injury. Amna has returned to Kolkata after the first game and will not be available for selection on Thursday.

Shillong Lajong were off to a flying start in the I-League this season as they defeated 2016/17 champions Aizawl FC 2-1 at home. The win was a great achievement for Alison Kharsyntiew’s side as they took the field with 11 Indian players.

Lajong’s decision to not include a single overseas player earlier in the season came as a surprise and was written off by many. Their performance against Aizawl will encourage them to take the fight to fancied teams.

East Bengal’s record against Lajong has been very poor over the years especially in Shillong. It will be interesting to see how the Kolkata giants fair against their bogey team.
