Commentary

The signs are positive for Norwich, then, who will feel they've made the right move with their managerial change. Whether that will be enough to save them from relegation come the end of the season, we'll just have to see. That's all for now. Goodbye!
Norwich rise to 19th in the Premier League with eight points, two above Newcastle United. They've won back-to-back top-flight matches for the first time since April 2016. Smith's men still have a long way to go but they've caught up with the teams around them after their horrendous start. Southampton stay 13th.
Smith starts his Norwich tenure with a win! The Canaries have picked up three crucial points in their bid to survive the drop. Southampton were the stronger side in the second half, but once Pukki cancelled out Adams' early strike, the hosts grew into the game and snatched the victory through Hanley late on.
90' + 6' FULL-TIME: NORWICH CITY 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON
M. Normann
Yellow Card
Norwich City
90' + 4' Normann picks up a late yellow card for tugging down Broja down Southampton's left. Ward-Prowse swings the free-kick in, Norwich head it clear and that's it!
T. Krul
Yellow Card
Norwich City
90' + 3' Krul's booked for the length of time it takes him to take the goal kick. Every second counts for Norwich now.
90' + 2' Southampton have Norwich pinned in their own defensive third now and almost punish them! Walcott glances a header wide from the centre of the box as he reaches Ward-Prowse's cross. It's a great chance that's gone to waste.
90' + 1' There will be a minimum of four additional minutes. If Norwich don't do anything stupid, they should have this in the bag. Saints haven't looked right since half-time.
C. Tzolis
M. Rashica
Norwich City
90' Rashica gets the last few minutes off after a strong performance. Norwich's Greek winger Tzolis takes his place.
89' The Norwich fans are trying to cheer their team to victory but things are getting a little tense. The hosts are preparing another change.
88' Ward-Prowse's delivery is wayward this time. Sargent harries Bednarek to slow Southampton's next advance down. Adam Armstrong glides away from Aarons and rolls a tame shot into Krul's arms.
87' It's all hands on deck for Norwich now. The Canaries need to see this situation out. Hanley gets across to a cross in time to give Saints a corner, from which they gain another.
L. Rupp
B. Gilmour
Norwich City
86' Norwich decide to make a change. Gilmour trots off to warm applause. The Scotland international hasn't looked out of place. Rupp comes on.
85' Rashica plays a square pass in front of Southampton's box for the arriving Gilmour. Saints intercept, though, sending Gilmour scampering after the ball. Adam Armstrong strikes the ball against Hanley to earn a corner.
83' Going behind for the first time in the match seems to have roused Southampton. Ward-Prowse looks for Walcott with a searching pass into the box. Krul sees it coming and gets there first.
81' Williams leaves the pitch briefly after taking a knock but he looks to be OK. Hasenhuttl barks at his players, urging them forward. Saints have been far too slack in this second half.
B. Gilmour
Assist
Norwich City
79' Gilmour's delivery for that goal was spot on. He successfully found his Scotland team-mate. Now the mood at Carrow Road has changed dramatically. Can Norwich hold on to secure a vital win?
G. Hanley
Goal
Norwich City
79' GOAL! NORWICH CITY 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON! Norwich's captain Hanley makes a huge leap to reach Gilmour's corner and beat McCarthy with a header at the far post! The Canaries have taken flight under Smith!
78' Norwich force a corner down their left, giving Bednarek no option but to put the ball out...
77' Norwich patiently construct their next attack. They'd probably settle for a point here but a second consecutive win would do them the world of good. Williams' cross strikes Ward-Prowse. The home fans cry handball. The referee is unconvinced.
75' Chance for Norwich! Pukki jinks down the inside-right channel and beats his man before firing at McCarthy at the near post. The Saints keeper makes the stop to hand Norwich a corner, which the visitors clear.
74' Williams rushes in to intercept Diallo's lazy pass and steams upfield, only to lose the ball himself. Southampton counter down their left through Adam Armstrong who plays the safe pass. Armstrong darts into Norwich's box seconds later but can't get a clean shot at Krul.
Lyanco
Oriol Romeu
Southampton
73' Southampton substitution. Romeu goes off. Lycano comes on.
72' McCarthy catches Pukki with a trailing leg as he slides in to snuff out a half-chance for the Finn. It's entirely accidental and undeserving of punishment.
K. Walker-Peters
Yellow Card
Southampton
71' Walker-Peters' challenge on Sargent earns him a yellow card. We're entering what are likely to be a nervy final 20 minutes.
70' Southampton are sloppy in possession once again, allowing Norwich to pressure them. Walker-Peters nudges Sargent off the ball.
69' Romeu's speculative shot deflects out for a Saints corner. Norwich clear it easily. Walcott's follow-up cross is no problem for Krul.
68' Adam Armstrong gets the better of Hanley out wide and heads for the middle. Norwich recover well and counter. Livramento sweeps across from Southampton's right to stop Rashica before he reaches the penalty area.
67' Norwich's all-action midfielder Normann goes for goal from distance. The shot swerves high and wide.
66' Norwich have switched roles with Southampton in this second half. Now they're the ones having a go. Saints haven't had a shot since half-time.
65' Pukki gives Bednarek the slip to dribble through midfield. Ward-Prowse is on hand to help his team-mate out.
J. Bednarek
Yellow Card
Southampton
64' Bednarek is also booked for his reaction to the incident. Less of that, please.
B. Williams
Yellow Card
Norwich City
64' Williams is shown the yellow card for his challenge on Livramento.
63' There's a coming together between Williams and Livramento. Both young full-backs catch each other in the face as they go for the ball. Some pushing and shoving ensues before the referee steps in to sort the situation out.
63' Williams spots Normann's run down the inside-left and feeds the Norwegian. Southampton get to his cross before Pukki does.
T. Walcott
C. Adams
Southampton
62' Southampton substitution. Walcott is on for Adams.
60' Southampton are finding it harder to pin Norwich back now. They're being forced to do the chasing themselves.
59' Chance for Norwich! McCarthy misjudges Rashica's ball in. It floats just over the Southampton keeper to Gibson who can't keep his header down. That was a lucky escape for Saints.
58' Broja has gone up front alongside Adams for Southampton. Adam Armstrong has moved to their left flank. Rashica races onto Normann's pass down the left and earns Norwich another corner.
A. Broja
M. Elyounoussi
Southampton
57' Southampton make their first change of the game. The Albanian forward Broja replaces Elyounoussi.
56' Norwich are definitely looking more lively now. Sargent rolls Pukki into the right of the box. Salisu slides in, making just enough contact to put the Finn off his cross. Southampton get the goal kick.
55' Norwich waste the opportunity to test McCarthy again as Rashica's corner sails out of play at the far post. Smith shouts some words of encouragement to the winger.
54' Rashica switches the play to Sargent who sees off Livramento. Pukki holds up Aarons' first cross and the right-back tries again to no effect. Norwich keep the pressure on and Sargent's shot deflects out for a corner.
52' Rashica receives a pass to feet from Normann inside the D. The Kosovan swivels around and sweeps a shot towards goal that drops into the arms of McCarthy. That's encouraging for Norwich.
51' Krul races out of his goal to get to a throughball before Adam Armstrong. Romeu chips a teasing cross in the direction of Adams. Krul gets high to put Adams off and it bounces harmlessly out for a goal kick.
49' Norwich are pressing Southampton higher up the pitch now, aiming to force more errors. Hasenhuttl's men are comfortable in such situations though and get a free-kick as Gilmour trips Romeu.
48' Normann sweeps a high cross towards the far post. McCarthy anticipates it before McLean does and grabs it.
47' Aarons finds Sargent who has slotted in on the right of Norwich's front three. The American keeps the hosts moving.
46' Norwich get the second half going having made that change. Southampton remain unchanged.
J. Sargent
T. Cantwell
Norwich City
46' Norwich have made a half-time change. Cantwell still isn't fully fit after some time out and it showed in the opening 45 minutes. Sargent replaces him.
Southampton had 12 shots to Norwich's one in the first half. While the visitors have been unable to break the Canaries down since Pukki's equaliser, you wouldn't bet against them scoring again if the pattern of the game stays the same. Norwich will need to be more proactive in the second half.
It's all even at the break in what has been a typical bottom-half-of-the-table encounter. Southampton have largely been the aggressors, taking the lead early on through Adams before Pukki quickly cancelled it out. Since then, Norwich have defended ably, although they've needed Krul to save from Adams after Hanley's mistake.
45' + 2' HALF-TIME: NORWICH CITY 1-1 SOUTHAMPTON
45' + 1' Southampton escape the free-kick with the ball until Cantwell pinches it back off Adams to approach the box. The referee takes a moment to think about it before blowing the whistle in Adams' favour.
45' Normann knocks the ball forward for Gilmour who tries to hold off Salisu. The Ghanaian steams in to give Norwich a free-kick down their right. There'll be one minute added onto the end of this half.
43' Hanley slips high up the pitch and Southampton race forward to exploit it! Adams gets into the box and curls the ball towards the bottom left corner. Krul dives to his right to spare his captain any further blushes. Norwich clear the resulting corner.
41' Aarons does well to see off Walker-Peters' challenge and see a deep ball out for a goal-kick. It's been one-way traffic for Southampton in this first half for the most part.
39' Hanley spots Southampton making progress down their left and comes across to cut the chance out. The visitors try once more as Ward-Prowse arrows another accurate ball towards the box and Hanley blocks Elyounoussi's shot. Norwich smuggle the ball out as far as Ward-Prowse again who fires off-target.
38' Diallo overcooks a pass down the right. Livramento is unable to keep it in play near Norwich's corner flag.
36' Aarons isn't deceived by Elyounoussi's stepover and wins the ball. Pukki shows determination to win a throw-in which he takes quickly. The home fans groan as Norwich are forced to pass all the way back to Krul.
34' Southampton tease Norwich a bit more, flinging cross after cross into the Canaries' box. Salisu eventually gets bored and lets rip at goal from range. Krul raises his arms to make the catch.
32' Norwich have had just 28 per cent of the ball so far. The fans may be getting impatient but the hosts are looking solid.
30' Walker-Peters reaches Ward-Prowse's excellent crossfield pass and finds Elyounoussi's dart towards the byline. Adam Armstrong waits nearby for the cutback but Norwich intercept his shot.
29' Livramento holds the ball up for Ward-Prowse who swings into the box from deep. Norwich see the cross out. Southampton are trying their best to force the issue though.
28' Aarons wins possession for Norwich before running into traffic. The Canaries will have to settle for a throw-in.
26' Diallo eases away from Gilmour, sending Southampton scampering down their left. Adam Armstrong passes back for Elyounoussi. The Norwegian's snatched shot goes off-target.
24' Krul fires forward from his own box and Norwich win the second ball to keep possession. Cantwell plays a round-the-corner pass for Pukki who finds Williams out wide. Williams crosses into the area not once but twice. Saints survive both times.
23' Ward-Prowse switches the play to Livramento who's in tons of space down the right. The young right-back plops a cross towards the far post and it bounces out of play for a goal kick.
22' Livramento strays offside, killing Southampton's attacking momentum for now. Norwich are holding their own at the moment.
21' Ward-Prowse sweeps the corner in. Gibson punts it out for a Saints throw-in.
20' Elyounoussi strikes at goal from the edge of the box as Norwich's midfield parts wide open. His effort skids wide of the right-hand post. Adam Armstrong tries a similar strike seconds later and Gibson blocks to give Southampton another corner.
19' Diallo goes down in the box as he looks to reach a far post cross. There's a suggestion of a nudge from Cantwell but the referee waves play on.
18' Ward-Prowse tries to pick out Bednarek with his corner kick but Norwich get to it first. It's been a feisty opening 15 minutes or so.
16' Southampton are dictating things at the moment. Norwich are content to soak up pressure and try to strike on the counter. Adam Armstrong dribbles towards the box and the hosts poke the ball out for a Saints corner.
14' Adam Armstrong hangs up the ball from the byline for Elyounoussi. The Norwegian controls it and fires straight at a Norwich defender. Ward-Prowse gets on the end of the rebound and lashes straight at Krul's midriff.
13' Southampton force the corner away from their goal. Rashica's follow-up cross bounces straight into the hands of McCarthy.
11' Norwich are starting to find their feet after that shaky start. Salisu miskicks and Pukki nips in, teasing Walker-Peters down the right. The striker plays the ball off the left-back to win the hosts their first corner of the game.
9' Normann looks up and tries to slide Rashica in down the right. Walker-Peters gets across in time to intercept the throughball.
M. Aarons
Assist
Norwich City
7' That build-up play from Norwich was lovely, the sort of thing they could do regularly in the Championship but not so much so far this season. Aarons' cross was great, but McCarthy will be disappointed to have been beaten at his near post.
T. Pukki
Goal
Norwich City
7' GOAL! NORWICH CITY 1-1 SOUTHAMPTON! Norwich peg Saints back straight away! Rashica finds Aarons on the overlap and the full-back crosses for Pukki at the near post. The Finn stoops low to nod a header past McCarthy!
7' Walker-Peters loses out high up the pitch and Norwich counter down their right. It's worrying for Southampton...
6' It's not the start Norwich would have wanted from this game and the Southampton fans are revelling in it. "You're getting sacked in the morning!" they crow at Smith.
A. Armstrong
Assist
Southampton
4' Assist Adam Armstrong
C. Adams
Goal
Southampton
4' GOAL! NORWICH CITY 0-1 SOUTHAMPTON! Norwich can't get the ball away from their box and Adam Armstrong hooks it to his strike partner Adams. Adams takes it down and smuggles it past Krul into the bottom right corner of the net.
2' Southampton win an early throw-in down their right which is hurled in by Salisu. Norwich head it away at the first attempt.
1' Southampton, wearing their preferred red, white and black garb, get this game under way! Norwich will play in their usual yellow and green.
Norwich have lost four of their last five Premier League games against Southampton, including both their meetings in 2019-20. The Canaries are winless in their last 10 Premier League home games, their longest ever run without a top-flight victory at Carrow Road. Smith's been hired to bring about improvement to this side. Can he?
Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl names basically the same side as the one that ended Smith's job at Villa two weeks ago, barring one change. Diallo comes in for Stuart Armstrong, who doesn't make the matchday squad.
Smith puts his immediate stamp on Norwich by making three changes to the side that beat Brentford. Their captain Hanley starts, as do Gilmour and Cantwell who didn't get much game time under Farke this term. Norwich need more goals from players other than Pukki, who's scored 35 per cent of their league goals since the start of the 2018-19 season.

Smith's first game in charge of Norwich is against the opponents he faced in his last match at Villa, Southampton. Having won three of their last four league games, Saints are sitting comfortably in mid-table, and will believe they can get three consecutive league wins for the first time since last November.
Bottom-of-the-table Norwich have had a busy international break, replacing Daniel Farke with Dean Smith in the hope of boosting their chances of Premier League survival. The former Aston Villa boss has arrived at just the right time as the Canaries grabbed their first win in 21 Premier League games against Brentford last time out.
