Commentary

Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Newcastle are next in action on the road to Everton on Thursday in their Premier League clash. Manchester United host Burnley in their next outing on the same day.
Newcastle United earn a valuable point in their battle against the drop against Manchester United, although the home side will feel that they should have claimed the victory at St James' Park. Allan Saint-Maximin fired the Magpies ahead with a fine run and finish in the seventh minute. The Frenchman could have extended their lead in the second half, but was denied by David de Gea. Edinson Cavani equalised for the Red Devils with a scuffed strike from close range. However, Newcastle were undeterred and came inches away from a winner as Jacob Murphy struck the post before Miguel Almiron saw an effort brilliantly stopped by De Gea. Eddie Howe's men were outstanding and will feel buoyed by their performance, although injuries to Callum Wilson and Saint-Maximin will be a huge concern.
90' + 7' FULL-TIME: NEWCASTLE UNITED 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED
90' + 6' Cavani is felled on the edge of the box by Lascelles, but the offside flag is raised late against the forward.
Javi Manquillo
Yellow Card
90' + 5' Manquillo goes into the book for time-wasting for the home side.
90' + 3' CHANCE! Dubravka drops a routine catch in the Newcastle box and Sancho steers it away from the keeper. He works an offload back to Cavani, but he scuffs his effort at goal and sees Schar clear the danger for the hosts. A huge let-off for Dubravka.
90' + 1' BLOCK! Joelinton lines up a strike from the edge of the box that is blocked by Varane. It appears to strike the defender on the arm, but the referee waves away Newcastle's appeal for a penalty. Varane was outside of the penalty area anyway.
90' There will be six minutes of added time.
89' Newcastle have been outstanding this evening and deserve the three points for their efforts. However, as it stands, they're only going to take one from the contest.
87' OFF THE POST AND DE GEA PRODUCES A STUNNING SAVE! Newcastle somehow fail to find the back of the net. Murphy curls a right-footed strike at goal from the left-inside channel that rattles the right post. Almiron latches on to the rebound and steers a left-footed effort towards the top-left corner, but De Gea reaches at full stretch to turn it over the bar.
84' Shelvey goes for goal from distance with a strike on his right foot, but it is a tame effort that travels straight at De Gea.
D. Gayle
A. Saint-Maximin
83' Gayle replaces Saint-Maximin for the home side. Newcastle will be hopeful that the Frenchman has not suffered a serious injury.
82' Saint-Maximin goes for a challenge and limps away for the home side. It is a nightmare scenario for Howe to lose both Saint-Maximin and Wilson to injury in the same game.
81' CLOSE! Sancho surges down the right flank and cuts a dangerous low ball towards Cavani at the near post. The Uruguay international goes for a flick, but cannot make contact and no red shirt is following in behind.

Goal

Dalot surges down the right flank and picks out the forward with a fine cutback. Cavani shoots, but sees his first effort blocked by a crowd of defenders. He attempts a second effort that he miscues, but it deflects off Lascelles' boot and trickles into the bottom-right corner.
Joelinton
Yellow Card
70' Joelinton is booked for dissent after conceding a free-kick for a high-boot.
68' Fraser is down after a collision with Telles, but he appears to be okay to continue for the Magpies.

63' SAVE! Joelinton surges out from the back for the home side and feeds Fraser in space in the right-inside channel. He fires at goal, but De Gea makes a strong save to repel his effort. He goes down under pressure from Fernandes as he attempts to gather the rebound, but the referee tells him to get to his feet.
61' Rashford has space down the left flank and attempts a cross on his left foot, only to slice his delivery out for a goal-kick.
59' Newcastle have maintained their intensity in the second half and United have continued to underwhelm. Rangnick does not have a lot of options left for inspiration.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Yellow Card
57' Ronaldo catches Fraser with a late boot and goes into the book. A sign of frustration.
55' CHANCE! Fernandes releases Sancho with a precise long ball over the top before the forward surges into the box. He lays an offload for Cavani to strike at goal, but he scuffs his effort wide of the right post.
54' Sancho has space down the right flank to lift a cross into the box, but he slices his delivery behind for a goal-kick. United continue to struggle in the final third.

49' SHOT! Rashford launches a dipping strike at goal from 25 yards that Dubravka has to watch all the way before turning his attempt over the bar.
48' WHAT A SAVE! De Gea keeps United in the game with a vital stop to deny Saint-Maximin. Krafth surges into the right-inside channel and plays a sublime ball across the face of goal. Saint-Maximin is unmarked and steers a strike towards goal, although he cannot generate a lot of power on his attempt. De Gea reacts just in time to make a one-handed stop before Varane clears the danger.
47' Saint-Maximin collects on the left flank in space and runs at Varane. He cuts inside to fire at goal, but Fernandes gets back to make a vital challenge.
46' We're back under way at St James' Park.
J. Sancho
Fred
46' Fred is withdrawn by Rangnick and is replaced by Sancho.
E. Cavani
M. Greenwood
46' Cavani replaces Greenwood at the break for the visitors.
Howe will be thrilled with the intensity of his team in the first half. They've won all the 50/50 duels and have put the Red Devils on the back foot. The only downside was the loss of Callum Wilson to a calf injury. Ralf Rangnick will be furious with United's performance. They've been poor in possession and have been toothless in the final third. United have to respond in the second half.
Newcastle United hold a 1-0 lead over Manchester United at the break in their Premier League clash. Allan Saint-Maximin put the Magpies ahead with a fine run and finish in the seventh minute. Eddie Howe's men have been the better team as the visitors have struggled to break down the hosts. A key 45 minutes awaits both sides in the second period.

45' + 2' Wilson gets to his feet, but he does not look overly comfortable on his left leg.
45' There will be four minutes of added time.
45' Wilson goes down under pressure from Greenwood and remains down on the deck. The striker has had two previous serious knee injuries, which is a massive concern for the home side.
43' Fernandes sees a low drive saved by Dubravka and he looks to the referee for a foul from Schar. However, it's all moot anyway as Ronaldo is offside in the build-up.
42' Joelinton takes a blow to the face from a Dalot cross. He requires treatment before the game can continue.
41' SAVE! Fernandes clips the resulting free-kick over the wall and catches the Newcastle defence asleep. Greenwood tries to poke an effort past Dubravka, but the keeper spreads himself to make a vital block.
40' Schar brings down Rashford with a loose challenge and presents United with a free-kick in a decent position.

35' Maguire lunges in on Wilson in the final third and gives away a free-kick in a useful position for Newcastle.
33' Rashford sends Fernandes into the right-inside channel and he digs out a cross. It proves to be too high for Greenwood, but Ronaldo collects and aims to shoot. However, he mis-hits his strike and sends the ball behind for a goal-kick, much to the delight of the home fans.
30' BLOCK! Greenwood collects an offload from McTominay in the final third and he drops his shoulder to fire at goal on his left foot. Lascelles reads the danger to make an important block.

17' Fernandes clips a cross towards Ronaldo in the box, but the delivery just evades the run of the forward in the middle.

S. Longstaff
Assist
7' Longstaff capitalises on a mistake by Varane and finds the run of Saint-Maximin, who delivers for the hosts with a fine finish.
A. Saint-Maximin
Goal
7' GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!! SAINT-MAXIMIN FIRES NEWCASTLE AHEAD!!!!! 1-0!!!!!! The Frenchman latches on to an offload from Longstaff before placing an effort away from De Gea into the top-right corner. Varane is the guilty party for the visitors as he loses possession in his own half. Longstaff pounces on the error and offloads to Saint-Maximin in space. He surges into the box before steering his strike into the back of the net.
5' Newcastle have started with a good intensity on the pitch and are putting the pressure on the visitors.
2' Maguire loses concentration and allows Fraser to surge past him and send a cross into the box. Varane is on hand for the visitors to clear the danger.
1' We're under way at St James' Park.
Newcastle have won two of their last four Premier League home games against Manchester United (L2), more than they had in their previous 13 against the Red Devils at St James’ Park (W1 D3 L9). They did lose this exact fixture 4-1 last season, however.
United have made two changes to their side that beat Norwich last time out. Victor Lindelof is absent after suffering from chest pains at Carrow Road. Varane comes into the back four to replace the Sweden international. Greenwood gets the call in the final third to replace Sancho, who drops to the bench.
Newcastle have made six changes to their side that was beaten 4-0 by Manchester City last time out. Howe has been forced to ring the changes due to COVID-19 cases in his squad along with injuries. Schar, Shelvey, Longstaff, Manquillo, Krafth and Saint Maximin come into the side this evening. Murphy and Almiron drop to the bench, while Ciaran Clark, Matt Ritchie and Joe Willock miss out. Isaac Hayden is suspended for the contest.
MANCHESTER UNITED SUBS: Phil Jones, Edinson Cavani, Luke Shaw, Jadon Sancho, Dean Henderson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek, Anthony Elanga.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-2-2): David de Gea; Diogo Dalot, Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire, Alex Telles; Scott McTominay, Fred; Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes; Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo.

NEWCASTLE UNITED (4-4-2): Martin Dubravka; Javier Manquillo, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Emil Krafth; Ryan Fraser, Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff, Allan Saint-Maximin; Joelinton, Callum Wilson.
Manchester United have slipped down the table after a 16-day layoff from action in the Premier League since their 1-0 win over Norwich City. Ralf Rangnick has enjoyed a 100% record to start his tenure in the top flight after beating both Crystal Palace and the Canaries. He and his players will have been grateful for the time away from the pitch, but the onus will be on the Red Devils to find their rhythm against the Magpies.
Newcastle are in the situation of requiring points from almost every fixture in their battle against relegation. The Magpies are three points adrift of safety in 19th place, but other clubs around them in the table have games in hand. Matters have improved slightly since the arrival of Eddie Howe, although the club have only secured one win to date in the campaign. Newcastle have lost their last three matches on the bounce, conceding 11 goals in the process. It is going to take a special effort to avoid a fourth-straight loss.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Newcastle United and Manchester United at St James' Park.
