Mohun Bagan pick-up morale boosting win against Aryan before heading into Kolkata derby...

Mohun Bagan eased past Aryan to a comfortable 2-0 win in their seventh match of the Calcutta Football League (CFL) 2018 at the Kalyani Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Shilton D'Silva opened the scoring as early as the ninth minute and Aser Dipanda struck late (84') to continue his goal-scoring streak to seal three points for Bagan.

Sankarlal Chakraborty made three changes to the side that won 5-0 against W.B. Police. Arijit Bagui and Eze Kingsley were reinstated the starting lineup after the duo served their one-match bans. Gurjinder Kumar started in place of Lalchhawnkima as the latter was rested after he suffered a head injury against W.B. Police when he clashed with keeper Shilton Paul.

Mohun Bagan started on the ascendency. In the fourth minute, Ambekar cut inside from the left and had a crack at goal but it was kept out brilliantly by goalkeeper Souvik Santra.

It did not take long for Bagan to draw first blood as the Mariners scored their first on the 9th minute. Bagui floated in a perfect delivery towards the far post from a flag-kick which was met by Kisekka. The Ugandan striker headed the ball back into the mix towards an unmarked Shilton D’Silva, who made no mistake with his header from close range.

Dicka and Kisekka’s partnership has been one of the strong points of Bagan recently and in the 15th minute, the two overseas players combined well which to almost hand Bagan their insurance goal. Kisekka used all the tricks up his sleeve to beat two defenders and delivered a cross into the box for Dipanda. The Cameroonian tried to execute a spectacular overhead kick but it sailed wide off mark.

Britto and Mahata continued to swap wings which kept the wing-backs on their toes. Similarly, Aryan’s Emmanuel kept swinging like a pendulum across Bagan’s defence which restricted Bagui's freedom to overlap.

In the 84th minute, the attacking trio of Mahata, Kisekka and Dipanda combined beautifully to hand Bagan their second goal. Mahata, who climbed up the youth ranks of the century-old club, split open Aryan defence and found Kisekka on the right. The former Gokulam Kerala striker delivered an inch-perfect cross for an unmarked Dipanda who scored his seventh goal of the league.

This win against Aryan will surely boost the confidence of Chakraborty’s men before they clash with arch-rivals East Bengal in the Kolkata derby that is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. kick-off on September 2 at the Yuva Bharati Stadium in Salt Lake.
