Aser Dipanda was in fine form on the day as Mohun Bagan hit FCI for five goals...

Mohun Bagan sailed to a comfortable 5-0 victory against Food Corporation India (FCI) in their ninth match of the Calcutta Football League (CFL) 2018 to consolidate their position on top of the table. Aser Pierrick Dipanda (45+4', 62', 68') found the net thrice whereas Tirthankar Sarkar (74') and Lalchhawnkima (84') scored the last two goals to complete the rout.

Sankar Lal Chakraborty made two changes to the starting lineup that featured in the 2-2 draw against East Bengal on Sunday. Azharuddin Mallick was given a start ahead of Pintu Mahata who was rested after a brilliant performance in the Kolkata derby whereas skipper Shilton Paul was relegated to the bench in favour of Sankar Roy.

Mohun Bagan started the match on the ascendency and had the first sight on goal on the sixth minute when Henry Kisekka fired a shot towards the far post. It was brilliantly saved by Dhananjoy Adhikari by diving low to his left.

Mohun Bagan continued their onslaught in the attacking third but a gritty FCI defence refused to get beaten. A haphazard clearance from Subodh Kumar could have handed Bagan their first goal but Bikash Panji's men were fortunate enough to see the ball sail inches over the crossbar.

Bagan's profligacy in front of goal was once again in the limelight as Kisekka failed to guide home two headers within a span of five minutes.

The Mariners reaped rewards of their incessant attacks right at the nick of halftime when Dipanda converted a set-piece floated in by Abhishek Ambekar. The former Minerva Punjab defender sent a curling delivery into the six-yard box which was headed towards goal by Britto PM. But Adhikari continued his heroics under the sticks as he stuck out a hand to deny the header from going in. The loose ball fell for Dipanda who made no mistake to score his eighth goal from point-blank range.

Mahata and Tirthankar Sarkar were called into action for the second half in place Mallick and Britto.

Bagan continued their attacking prowess in the second half and they doubled their lead on the 62nd minute. This time it was Arijit Bagui who floated in a cross into the six-yard box and Dipanda made no mistake in burying it into the net.

Six minutes later Dipanda completed his hat-trick with a similar goal when substitute Mahata dished a perfect low cross for the I-League golden boot winner. The Cameroonian striker is currently leading the scoring charts in CFL with 10 goals to his name.

Frustration got the better of Laxmi Kanta Dey as the defender was shown a straight red in the 72nd minute when he struck his elbow to Dipanda's face which sent the striker reeling on the ground. Sarkar scored the fourth for Bagan from the ensuing set-piece as his left-footed curler nestled straight into the net.

The floodgates had already opened and Bagan pumped in the fifth on the 84th minute when Lalchhawnkima's header pierced the net from a flag-kick.

A brilliant second half helped Mohun Bagan get a firmer grip on top of the table as they currently lead the pack with 23 points from nine matches with seven more goals scored than arch-rivals East Bengal.
