Kaizer Chiefs were made to sweat for a 1-0 win over Maritzburg United in a PSL match played at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday night.

Bernard Parker scored the only goal of the match which earned the Soweto giants their first away victory over the Team of Choice since September 2017.

Ramahlwe Mphahlele made his first appearance of the season for Chiefs, who had claimed the Soweto Derby bragging rights when they defeated Orlando Pirates 2-1 on November 6.

On the other hand, strikers Richard Zumah, Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Amadou Soukouna all started for Maritzburg with the Team of Choice having failed to score in their last two league games.

It was a lively start to the game with both teams creating chances at either end.

An unmarked Njabulo Ngcobo failed to keep his header on target from close range after connecting with Khama Billiat's cross.

Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi then pulled off two good saves to deny Zumah and Hlongwane as Maritzburg looked to score their first goal since October 23 when they defeated TS Galaxy 1-0 at home.

The Team of Choice allowed Amakhosi to build from the back and hit the visitors on the counter. Travis Graham won possession in midfield and he quickly played a through pass for Zumah, whose scuffed shot was gathered by Akpeyi.

The score was 0-0 at the interval following a first-half which saw Maritzburg create the better chances, but they failed to take them.

Chiefs continued to control the game after the restart, but the four-time PSL champions lacked creativity which they needed to cut open Maritzburg's tight defence.

Amakhosi then resorted to playing crosses into the hosts' box and the move paid off as Billiat's delightful cross was headed home by Parker from close range to hand Chiefs a 1-0 lead in the 63rd minute.

Maritzburg coach Ernst Middendorp introduced Rowan Human, who looked to make an immediate impact as he forced Akpeyi into making two good saves with the hosts looking to grab a late equalising goal.

The visitors' coach Stuart Baxter responded by introducing defensive-minded Anthony Akumu and the vistors stood firm at the back and ultimately, Chiefs claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Maritzburg on the night.

Chiefs remained sixth on the league standings despite their win - level on points with fourth-placed SuperSport United, while Maritzburg also remained 11th on the log.

Chiefs will now take on AmaZulu FC on Wednesday, while Maritzburg United are scheduled to face Marumo Gallants on the same day.
