East Bengal and Mohun Bagan are locked on the same set of points after having played six games each. The former are placed sixth on the table with nine points while the latter occupy the eighth position.

On Sunday, the two Kolkata giants will fight not just for bragging rights but also that they need to close the gap at the top of the table as Chennai City FC look in sublime form.

Under coach Alejandro Menendez, East Bengal have had a mixed campaign so far with three wins and as many draws. The transfer ban didn’t help their cause coupled with an injury to Mahmoud Al Amna, who has since been released. Enrique Esqueda too has picked up an injury which means he has been ruled out of the derby.

Menendez was forced to include Kassim Aidara in his starting line-up in their last game as his defensive qualities allowed Lalrindika Ralte to move further up.

All eyes will be on striker Jobby Justin who will lead the line and shoulder the responsibility of scoring.

Mohun Bagan I-League 2018-19

Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan have only registered two wins this season. Despite having one of the most potent attacks in the I-League with Henry Kisseka, Dipanda Dicka and Sony Norde, the Mariners have only scored seven.

Sourav Das will be key for the Green and Maroon brigade as the midfielder has been in good form this season. Pintu Mahata, who is set to undertake a late fitness test, could be tasked with the responsibility to deliver crosses from the right.

What would concern coach Shankarlal Chakraborty is that Yuta Kinowaki and Omar Elhusseiny haven’t been in the best of forms.

It will be interesting to see if Chakraborty will hand an opportunity to winger Sheikh Faiaz.

The biggest match of the season is upon us. Who will triumph?
