Churchill Brothers are off to a marginally better start this season as compared to the previous one where they had faced five back-to-back defeats before picking their first point at home. Their first victory had come in their seventh game which was followed by four more wins in the next five games and none since in the I-League till date.
Under Romanian coach Petre Gigiu, the Goan side is currently unbeaten from their three away fixtures at the beginning of the 2018-19 season but haven't managed to pick up a win yet. Beginning their campaign with a goalless draw against Minerva Punjab, the Red Machines were restricted to a point each against Chennai City (2-2) and Real Kashmir (0-0).
In fact, Churchill's resilience paid off at the end of the game against the Kashmiri outfit as they were down to 10 men when goalkeeper James Kithan was sent off for handling the ball outside his area. Vigneshwaran Baskaran will hence start in between the sticks.
Dawda Ceesay and Co. will be expected to step up their game in front of the home support who will be cheering for them on to find the back of the net.
Shillong Lajong, with the management consciously choosing to go with an all-Indian squad, got off to a winning start when they got the better of Aizawl FC but have since not picked up a single point in their next three fixtures against East Bengal (3-1 loss), Indian Arrows (1-0 loss) and Gokulam Kerala (3-1 loss).
Head coach Alison Kharsyntiew will be pushing his boys to garner a positive result in Goa, where they have a poor record having won only twice and drawn just once in 10 outings.
The Reds from the northeast will be relying on the pace of players like Mahesh Naorem and Phrangki Buam from the flanks. Other than the wingers, Rakesh Pradhan has been the only other contributor among the goalscorers.
Aibanbha Dohling and Kenstar Kharshong will have to bear the responsibility of keeping the home team's attack at bay especially that Novin Gurung will be missing out on account of the latter's double booking in Lajong's last game.
Will Churchill Brothers have it easy at home or will the Shillong Lajong youngsters give the Goan giants a run for their money on Thursday?
