The ex-Gunners midfielder feels the Uruguay international has made a major difference to Unai Emery's side after his summer arrival from Sampdoria

Arsenal midfield pair Lucas Torreira and Granit Xhaka have underpinned Unai Emery's success in the early months of his tenure in north London, according to Ray Parlour.

The Uruguay and Switzerland internationals have started the last seven Premier League games together at the base of the Gunners midfielder.

And Parlour has drawn comparisons between the duo and the role Gilberto Silva played in the 'Invincibles' Arsenal side during the 2003-04 season.

“Torreira’s changed a lot of that," Parlour told the Daily Star of Arsenal's midfield authority.

“I think in midfield, Xhaka wasn't really a proper holding midfielder.

“I've seen the difference now, they're a lot more hard to break down now than they was at the start of the season, because Torreira wasn't playing.

“You won't believe how important those players are, the two in midfield.

“Gilberto Silva, he done a wonderful job in that unbeaten season.

“And those sort of guys, again you won't see them a lot during the game, but he does a great job.

“So it looks a lot more balanced now with Torreira playing."

Torreira, 22, had been held back at the start of the campaign before earning his first Premier League start for Arsenal against Everton.

That has triggered a lengthy run in the first team, a streak which has been underpinned by his ferocious tackling and expansive passing - turning him into a fans favourite as a result.

Emery's team will be looking to extend their unbeaten run to 17 games when they return to action on November 25 as they travel to Bournemouth.
