The Atletico Madrid attacker was assembled with the France squad at Clairefontaine ahead of their World Cup qualifier against Sweden on Friday but, unlike his team-mates, failed to applaud the centre-back’s achievement.
Didier Deschamps had the team gathered at a long table and said: "The squad is complete now, with Rafa. Well done, congratulations, he’s a European champion for the third time."
At this, the players broke into a round of applause, but it was notable that Griezmann, sitting at the head of the table beside Dimitri Payet, failed to acknowledge that 24-year-old’s achievement.
Having been criticised on social media, Griezmann followed up with: “Are you kidding me?!!!”
Et puis quoi encore ?!!! pic.twitter.com/XBPrLEs0iv— Antoine Griezmann (@AntoGriezmann) June 6, 2017
Despite presenting his defence, he was accused of being disrespectful to his colleague.
Et t'es content ? C'est un manque de respect. T'es le seul à faire ça. T'as trop pris la grosse tête, redescend mec !— #MerciLacazette (@RemiPlisson) June 6, 2017
“And are you happy? It’s a lack of respect. You were along in doing that. You’ve taken a big head, comeback man!” one user Tweeted, although others argued it was simply a consequence of the rivalry between Real and Atleti.
Deschamps will certainly expect both to work together in tandem at the weekend, when France tackle Sweden, with a victory set to push them to the cusp of World Cup 2018 qualification.
