Iran coach Carlos Queiroz can see the bigger picture with respect to VAR, adamant it improves football's "credibility" despite seeing the technology potentially deny his team a draw with Spain on Wednesday as they fell just short in a 1-0 loss

The technology has been implemented at the World Cup for the first time this year and has already – less than a week into the tournament – been the focus of much debate .

During France's 2-1 win over Australia in Kazan on Saturday, VAR was used to award Les Bleus a penalty after referee Andres Cunha had failed to penalise Josh Risdon for catching Antoine Griezmann, though critics bemoaned the significant delay between the incident and decision.

Cunha was again involved on Wednesday in the same stadium, this time reviewing Saeid Ezatolahi's second-half strike and correctly not allowing it to stand as the midfielder had strayed just offside.

Without the technology Iran may have held on to a 1-1 draw, but Queiroz thinks the situation is bigger than him and his team.

"For me, as a trainer, VAR is coming too late," Queiroz told reporters at the Kazan Arena.

"If we had it six months later, maybe today we had an added point, but it's good for the credibility of football.

"I've nothing to say about the quality of Spain's win other than to say I think they added to the loyalty, integrity of the Iranian players.

"It [the Iran performance] deserved a little better in this match, but that's football. For the Iranian players to play against Spain, we are winners because we learnt a lot. We only had two possible results; we win or we learn, and we learnt a lot."

Iran still hold a chance of advancing to the round of 16, with a win over Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal on the final matchday of Group B play enough to see them through.
