Sloppy Sydney FC salvage Adelaide United draw in A-League season opener

No winner could be found in the competition's first game of the season

Sydney FC were far from their best against Adelaide United on Friday night, but made the most of their one clear chance to hold the Reds to a 1-1 draw in the A-League season opener.

A tight first-half at Hindmarsh Stadium saw Adelaide boast the best of few chances with Craig Goodwin going close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute with the Reds winger only denied the season's first goal courtesy of a fine save from Andrew Redmayne.

The Sydney FC shot stopper was however caught off his line in the dying seconds of the half and Scott Galloway took full advantage to fire home a fine long-range strike just before the break.

That was Adelaide's first goal against the Sky Blues in over 270 minutes of A-League football and gave them plenty of confidence heading into the final 45 minutes.

With the lead and looking dangerous, the Reds appeared to have Sydney FC rattled with Josh Brillante and Rhyan Grant both picking up yellow cards early in the second half.

Missing the pace of injured attacker Trent Buhagiar, the Sky Blues were struggling to carve out any clear chances against an Adelaide side that hadn't conceded in four straight FFA Cup clashes.

But a tidy ball into the box from Milos Ninkovic and clinical finish from Adam Le Fondre was all it took to bring Sydney FC level in the 78th minute.

Both sides pressed for a winner but 1-1 would be how it remained, a result the Reds in particular will be frustrated with - their last home win against the Sky Blues now dating back to November 2015.
