Similarities between FNB Stadium and Mordovia Arena an 'accidental coincidence'

Eyebrows have been raised due to the similarities between the Russian Mordovia Arena and South Africa's very own FNB Stadium

Russian authorities have described the similarities between 2018 Fifa World Cup Stadium the Mordovia Arena and South Africa’s very own FNB Stadium as a pure coincidence.

The Stadium which has a capacity of 44 000 and was completed at the end of April has several distinct qualities concerning the design which has raised several eyebrows surrounding its inspiration.

However, the Russian 2018 World Cup Directorate has called the similarities a coincidence.

“No more than an accidental coincidence,” a response issued to Business Insider South Africa read.

“But we certainly like the resemblance to the [FNB] stadium, which hosted the opening matches and the finals of the FIFA World Cup in 2010,” the directorate added.

Meanwhile, while the FNB Stadium was built to symbolise a calabash, the directorate revealed that the design behind the Mordovia Arena where construction began in 2010 was done to represent the symbols of the Republic of Mordovia.

“The final version of visualization is connected to a greater degree with the symbols of the Republic of Mordovia, which in our country is called ‘solar’,” the directorate continued.

“In addition, the sun to Mordovian people embodies the source of life, joy [and] a [new] beginning,” the directorate concluded.

Despite the distinct similarities, the architects of the 2010 Fifa World Cup venue have stated that they are not the least bit offended by the startling coincidence.

“Copying is the highest act of flattery,” the director of Boogertman + Partners, Bob van Bebber told the publication.

“I also notice from the description that the seats are also orange,” reflected

“Maybe another coincidental similarity [with the FNB stadium],” he said.

“Not that we are accusing them of copying. I think our narrative which informed the design of Soccer City [FNB Stadium], will definitely be different to their narrative if they have one,” he concluded.
