New Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo has been ruled out of action for three to four weeks due to injury.

The 28-year-old shot-stopper recently joined the Buccaneers from Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs on a free transfer.

Khuzwayo has been part of the team’s preparations for the 2018/19 Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign which is scheduled to start this weekend.

Many expected him to get the nod ahead of Siyabonga Mpontshane, Wayne Sandilands and Jackson Mabokgwane and make his official debut against Highlands Park in a league game on Saturday.

However, the Soweto giants have since announced that the former South Africa youth international will miss the start of the season after picking up an ankle injury.

“Goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo will miss the start of the league as he is set to be out of action for between 3-4 weeks,” reads a statement on the club website.

“Khuzwayo will see an orthorpaedic surgeon this week to remove screws in his ankle and to have a scope performed.”

“Although not serious, this treatment is more of a corrective measure to allow the player to endure a pain-free season with the Buccaneers,” conclude the statement.

Pirates head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic will have to choose between Mpontshane, Mabokgwane and Sandilands when they face PSL returnees Highlands Park this weekend.

Mpontshane ended last season as Bucs' first-choice keeper, while Sandilands scooped the Golden Glove accolade at the club's awards last month.

Highlands Park are back in the PSL after winning last season's National First Division (NFD) title.

The encounter is scheduled to take place at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.
