The green and gold have more eyes on them than ever before

Over a half a million Australians tuned in to watch the Matildas first match at the 2019 Women's World Cup on Sunday night.

While Australia did fall to Italy 2-1 in their tournament opener, the green and gold clearly aren't short on support back home.

According to TV ratings released on Monday, 570,000 people watched the match on SBS with thousands more streaming the match via Optus Sport.

The figure made the Matildas clash the most popular sports program on Sunday night as it edged out both the Cricket World Cup and NRL.

The Matildas were helped by a relatively friendly kick-off time of 9pm (AEST) and will likely struggle to pull in the such strong numbers for their next two group matches.

Australia's next game takes place on Friday morning against Brazil with the action getting underway at 2am (AEST).

While the green and gold will play their final group game on June 19 against Jamaica with a kick-off time of 5am (AEST).

Though the Matildas may have peaked in terms of viewership, their initial return of 570,000 viewers is significantly more than the 406,000 that tuned in to this season's A-League grand final.
