The City Football Group, which owns the Premier League side and clubs in New York and Melbourne, have made moves to sign the midfielder

The City Football Group, Manchester City’s parent company, are hoping to wrap up a deal for Yangel Herrera in the coming weeks, Goal understands.

Schmeichel: Top four beyond City

Herrera, 19, plays for Venezuelan side Atletico Venezuela and has attracted the interest of City’s South American scouts in recent months.

Atletico president Ruben Villavicencio has confirmed that there is a bid on the table from the CFG, which owns Manchester City, New York City, Melbourne City and holds a 20 per cent stake in Yokohama F Marinos.

The deal for Herrera will not be wrapped up before the English transfer deadline on Tuesday, given he is currently at the South American Youth Championship, meaning one of Manchester City’s sister clubs, most likely New York, will benefit from his arrival.

“A decision will be made after the tournament and it will be one that suits the player,” Villavicencio said.

The youth tournament is due to finish on February 11, three days before Major League Soccer’s primary transfer window opens. Australia’s A-League clubs, meanwhile, are able to sign players at any time.
