The Masandawana mentor remains undeterred despite Onyango's costly mistake having surrendered two valuable points

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has continued to back goalkeeper Denis Onyango despite his howler which saw the Tshwane giants drop two valuable points in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title race.

Sundowns took the lead early against Polokwane City, thanks to a goal by Themba Zwane, but with seconds remaining before the interval, a mistake by Onyango saw City draw level.

Try as Masandawana did, they could not find the all-important winning goal, and the draw meant they missed out on an opportunity to move top of the league table.

But in spite of Mosimane’s disappointment, the 54-year-old defended his goalkeeper.

While Mosimane felt that Onyango was at fault, he reiterated his support for the Ugandan, suggesting that one mistake does not make him a bad goalkeeper.

“No.1 in Africa made a big mistake. As much as he has saved us, he’s part of it. You have to pay for it sometimes,’ Mosimane told SuperSport TV after the game.

“We love Denis. He has saved us. He did very well in Asec [Mimosas]. We must not forget these things,” he added.

“These things do happen, probably someday we will also benefit,” Mosimane concluded.

With Sundowns now just two points behind log leaders Bidvest Wits, their next clash could be a potential title decider.

Sundowns meet Wits at Bidvest Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, and a victory for Mosimane’s men could put them in pole position to retain their title, while Onyango will certainly look to redeem himself as they go in search of all three points.
