Madrid run interrupted with Villarreal draw

Real Madrid's sparkling run of form in front of goal came to an end on Saturday with a dull 0-0 draw at home to Villarreal.

Prior to this match Carlo Ancelotti's men had struck 21 goals in their opening six matches, their best scoring pace at the start of a league season since 1987-88.

PSG prevail without Messi

Paris Saint-Germain have dispatched their latest rival in Ligue 1, winning 2-0 over Montpellier thanks to goals in either half from Idrissa Gueye and Julian Draxler.

The club have now registered eight wins out of eight in the league - and that's without Lionel Messi firing on all cylinders!

Draxler makes it two

It took its time in coming, but PSG finally managed to get their second of the evening. Julian Draxler came off the bench and fired low to net following a host of missed chances from the likes of Neymar and Mbappe. That should be another three points in the bag for Pochettino's men.

How did he miss??

Kylian Mbappe had a golden chance to put PSG 2-0 up, but after rounding Montpellier keeper Omlin he somehow steered wide instead of the empty net!

Just minutes before Neymar had been denied by the stopper clean through, the Ligue 1 leaders are really pushing for a second now.

Ready for City?

Lionel Messi is among the Parc des Princes crowd watching PSG against Montpellier. Leo was ruled unfit for the weekend match, but will he make it back in time for Manchester City on Tuesday?

Camavinga joins the action

More goals to come?

PSG and Real Madrid are on their way back out for the second half of their clashes against Montpellier and Villarreal.

The likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Karim Benzema and Vinicius Junior are all in action, but so far Idrissa Gueye is the only man to find the net. Will that change in the next 45 minutes?

Idrissa Gueye PSG Montpellier Ligue 1 2021-22

Almost a second!

After Gueye's early screamer, it was almost Ander Herrera's turn to send the PSG fans wild.

The ex-Manchester United midfielder took aim from deep, but his thundering effort crashed back off the bar. A reprieve for Montpellier just before half-time, and they won't be too unhappy to go into the break 1-0 down.

A milestone for Ancelotti

There hasn't been much to celebrate for Real Madrid as they remain deadlocked 0-0 against Villarreal, but it is at least a special day for their coach.

Frank beaming after Liverpool tie

Unsurprisingly, Brentford boss Thomas Frank could not be happier with his team's effort during their epic 3-3 draw against Liverpool.

"We went toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in Europe. We have a well-earned point and were very brave throughout the game," he said to Sky Sports

"Where Liverpool are the most dangerous, is on the counter-attacks and they are committing so many runners forward. We also want to go high and be brave but at times we were a little bit too open.

"Both teams wanted to go for the win. We all know it's a massive point for us against a top team but we wanted to go for the win and Liverpool will go for the win always."

Joy for Simeone - in Italy

It was a fairly rotten Saturday for Diego Simeone and Atletico Madrid, but at least one member of the family seems to be faring better.

Son Giovanni has fired Verona into the lead against Genoa with an early strike, his first of the Serie A season.

PSG take the lead

PSG are ahead against Montpellier, and what a strike that is from Idrissa Gueye! No chance for Jonas Omlin against that long-range missile. 1-0 to the hosts!

'A wild ride!'

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has offered his thoughts on an incredible 3-3 draw for his side at Brentford this afternoon.

"[I'm] not sure enjoy is the right word. It was a wild ride. They deserved their three goals for the way they played. We obviously couldn't deal with the long balls today but we should have scored more goals," he said to Sky Sports.

"They deserved it. I don't think you can control them much better, we created a lot of clear-cut chances but couldn't deal with them defensively. These things happen. We should have scored more. If we win 3-2 or 4-3 we still have these struggles defensively. Toney and Mbuemo did really well. Brentford deserved a point.

"I have no problem with accepting when you play this kind of football. That's football. You have to create things to deserve to win. They deserved a point as well because they put up a proper fight. I respect that a lot. In the end there were situations we should do better - and then it could be a completely different game. Their goalie should have number 10 on his shirt with the balls that he played."

Flying start

Room for improvement

Liverpool will head home with something to show for their efforts in west London, but Jordan Henderson admits they were looking for more.

The Reds skipper has told Sky Sports: "It was an intense game, we knew it would be. It's a difficult place to come. It was a great atmosphere and they made it difficult for us. To go in the lead twice and not see it out is disappointing for us.

"At 2-1 up we had one or two chances to finish the game off. It gives them that little bit of hope. That's football sometimes, we're disappointed with the result but we have to give credit to Brentford.

"We're an intense team as well but there's a lot of room for improvement for us today. We controlled it a little bit better in the second half but unfortunately we couldn't hold on for the win."

Jordan Henderson Liverpool 2021-22

Living the dream

Brentford are enjoying a dream start to life in the Premier League, with Vitaly Janelt among those being carried along for the ride after netting his first top-flight goal in a stunning 3-3 draw with Liverpool.

He has told Sky Sports: "It was an incredible crowd today. We draw 3-3 against Liverpool, it's what we dream for as kids. Before the game we said we try the best against Liverpool - one of the best teams in the world - and now we draw 3-3.

"Liverpool are one of the best teams in the world and two times in a row they were in front and we came back. We have the mentality to score and maybe with a bit of luck we make it 4-3."

Stat pack

- Only Alan Shearer for Blackburn (124 games), Harry Kane for Tottenham (138) and Sergio Agüero for Man City (147) have reached 100 Premier League goals for a single club in fewer appearances than Mohamed Salah has for Liverpool (151).
- No Liverpool player has scored more Premier League goals in London than Mohamed Salah, who has equalled Steven Gerrard’s haul of 13 goals in the capital.
- Brentford’s eight Premier League goals this season have been scored by seven different players – excluding own goals, only Chelsea (10) and Man City (9) have had more different goalscorers in the competition this term.
- Following his assist for Ethan Pinnock, Ivan Toney has been involved in 45 league goals since the start of last season (33 goals, 12 assists – excluding play-offs), at least seven more than any other player across the top four tiers of English Football during this period.

Golfing inspiration for Pep

Pep Guardiola was pleased to see Manchester City pick up three important points, with his attention now turning to Team Europe's efforts to do the same in the Ryder Cup.

The Catalan coach has told BBC Sport: “Today we played for each other, ran for each other and passed the ball for each other. Now I’m watching the Ryder Cup and I’m seeing how they play for each other. That is nice when you play football too. It’s just three points of course, but the way we played was so good.

“Sometimes we believe we need a proper striker to finish, but the important thing is the way we play. The most important thing is doing it as a team and as a unit. It’s like last season. Sergio [Aguero] was injured all year and we won the Premier League.

“It’s a good way to start this fascinating week that we have ahead of us.”

Questions for Tuchel

Thomas Tuchel admits Chelsea were not at their best in a narrow defeat at Manchester City.

He told BT Sport: “We lost the game and City deserved to win. Until the goal we were very strong in the last 20 metres of the field, but only there unfortunately. Everywhere else we were not good enough to relieve pressure and to hurt them.

“The performance was not complex enough. Overall, simply, we were not at our best level. After the goal it felt a little bit like the belief in winning was bigger than the fear of losing, I don’t know why. We tried to push and get the crowd behind us. It was a very emotional game but never on our highest level.

“We conceded a goal from a set play. Even if we wanted to go for long balls for Romelu [Lukaku] it was not precise enough. I didn’t really feel the belief that we could escape the short balls. It was doubtful and it felt like we had something to lose. We lacked a little bit of freshness also.”

Thomas Tuchel Chelsea 2021-22

Ole unhappy

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw his Manchester United suffer a 1-0 home defeat to Aston Villa, but he is feeling hard done by.

He has told BBC Sport of Kortney's Hause's winner, which came with Ollie Watkins standing offside near David de Gea: "You can take it when it's a good goal conceded against you, but that's offside. He's touched David as he heads the ball. How that's a goal and Leicester have not got their goals, I just can't see the consistency and that's clearly offside."

The Red Devils boss added on Emi Martinez's antics before Bruno Fernandes' missed penalty: "I wasn't going to mention it but it's not right that they do that. I guess that should be a yellow card for someone but they have achieved what they wanted.

"We were very aggressive, very good on transition, got forward quickly but the final shot, final pass and final decision wasn't always the best one. 20 of the 30 attempts were blocked."

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Defeat for Atletico

The reigning champions have come unstuck in Spain, with a goal inside the opening four minutes enough to earn Alaves victory over Atletico Madrid.

Frustration for Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel's winning run against Pep Guardiola has come to a close, with Chelsea seeing their high standards slip in a 1-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Blues captain Cesar Azpilicueta has told BBC Sport: “We’re disappointed with the result. It was not our best performance. Especially in the first half it was hard to get out. We didn’t create chances and lost the ball too easily. After the goal we had a good reaction, but it was not enough to get something from the game.

“We are two great teams with great players and great ambition. Every game is different and every competition is different. We lost our chance to get three important points. Now we have to analyse what we didn’t do that well and move on to the next game. We didn’t lose the league today. If we’d have won we wouldn’t have won the league today either.”

Cesar Azpilicueta Chelsea 2021-22

Bringing the Hause down!

Kortney Hause almost went from hero to villain for Aston Villa, having opened the scoring against Manchester United and then conceded a penalty, but he was all smiles at the final whistle.

A relieved Villans star told BBC Sport: "When they gave the penalty I was devastated and fuming with myself. Looking back I didn't make myself any bigger. I've tried to bring my arms in so when Bruno blazed it over the bar I was relieved. I think it was justice in the end because I don't think it was a penalty.

"The rules are the rules. All we can do as players is play the game and play it well and whatever decision the referees and VAR want to give we have to get on with it."

"We had the better chances. We haven't really had to defend too tough as a team but we've come away with the three points and that's all that matters. We're happy."

City move joint-top in title tussle

FT: Chelsea 0-1 Man City

A win for Chelsea and a win for Manchester United today would have put further daylight between them and the title holders. Instead, Manchester City now pull level with them on 13 points from six games.

They actually go second due to superior goal difference, and sit with the exact same figures as Liverpool.

The Reds have a game in hand later today though, and could pull clear of the pack by the close of play.

Hause heroics end dozen-year wait

But the Blues are not the only side who have slipped up at the top of the table today too! Manchester United have lost to Aston Villa for the first time since 2009!

Truly, it will be one of Dean Smith's crowning achievements. The hosts had 28 shots on goal; the visitors had seven. But Kortney Hause's late header was the only one that found the net - and then Bruno Fernandes flubbed an almighty chance to ensure defeat was averted with an awful penalty.

It is the first league loss of the season for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - but combined with their Carabao Cup exit and their late reverse against Young Boys in the Champions League before, there seems to be a storm brewing over Old Trafford.

PENALTY MISS: Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa

(Bruno Fernandes)

From hero to zero for Kortney Hause - but Bruno Fernandes has failed to make Aston Villa pay with an absolutely shocking penalty!

The defender handles the ball as United thrash a delivery in and Edinson Cavani bellows for the spot-kick. Despite that, it is the midfielder who takes it over both him and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Fernandes steps up - and puts it into orbit. That is one of the worst penalty misses Old Trafford has seen in a very long time.

GOAL: Man Utd 0-1 Aston Villa

(Kortney Hause)

A sucker punch to rock Old Trafford!

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not been helped by the injuries to the forward-pressing Luke Shaw and his captain Harry Maguire today, but truly, his Manchester United side have once more paid the price for their inability to convert down the opposite end.

Kortney Hause darts across the box as a corner is swung in from the left and it takes a thin glance off his head, enough to squeeze in at the near-top corner. Dean Smith celebrates like Christmas has come early!

Cavani on for hosts

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

It's really getting towards last-chance saloon territory for a winner at Old Trafford - and during a break in play for an injury to Jacob Ramsey, Edinson Cavani is introduced.

Ramsey meanwhile looked to simply keel over of his own accord, clutching his knee. He's able to jog to the sidelines after a lengthy pause though.

Still no sight of a goal at Old Trafford and now another defender has left the field for the hosts too.

Breathtaking off the line stuff from Thiago Silva!

The visitors break the deadlock!

It has been coming for a while, you feel, and Manchester City have the lead they have craved for a long time. Gabriel Jesus gets caught in a crowded box after a deflected ball lands for him.

The Brazilian manages to twist around and tickle an effort in at the left post, confounding the defence around him. Advantage to Pep Guardiola and company.

Chelsea 0-0 Man City

We've resumed action in our two Premier Legaue early kick-offs now, as we head towards the interval in La Liga too.

It turns out Chelsea are missing Mason Mount - but even so, they've managed to keep the champions scoreless at the interval at Stamford Bridge.

Thomas Tuchel's record against Pep Guardiola looks to be on the line here, unless his side can go up a few gears.

Jesus misses close-range finish

Chelsea 0-0 Man City

Gabriel Jesus! My word, that was a close effort for the Manchester City man, who comes onto the near-perfect ball and sticks it off-target.

A better striker finishes that - but would a better striker be helping to dominate the ball like the Brazilian? That is the question.

Shaw forced off with injury

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

Now here is a blow Manchester United didn't need. They've been racking up position and possession, with the shots to match - but there's no breakthrough and now Luke Shaw has been forced off through injury.

The England man has been having some running repairs as he goes, but is unable to continue now. He leaves the field under his own steam so hopefully it is not too serious as problems go.

Diogo Dalot replaces him. Reece James, down at Stamford Bridge, has made way for Thiago Silva.

GOAL: Alaves 1-0 Atletico

(Victor Laguardia)

The perfect start for the hosts - and the worst way to get going for Atletico Madrid!

Alaves win an early corner, turn it in smartly from the right and Victor Laguardia is at the far post to guide it home with a close-range header.

That puts the cat among the pigeons already!

KO: Alaves v Atletico Madrid

Across the continent, La Liga's reigning champions are underway against Alaves, as they look to avoid a banana-skin on the road.

There is some work to be done this season of course - Diego Simeone knows that it will be a tight tussle once again.

Man Utd 0-0 Aston Villa

Mason Greenwood has arguably the best chance of the game now for the Red Devils at Old Trafford, and steps around two defenders with silky grace.

Still no goals.

Tough going for Chelsea so far

No goals to speak of yet, but it is both sides hailing from the north of England who are doing the good stuff so far.

Manchester City have forced Chelsea to hold at the back somewhat, but up at Old Trafford, Manchester United have gone close a couple of times.

Bruno Fernandes slapped a free-kick from just outside the box into the wall and then Cristiano Ronaldo just pulled an effort wide.

At both ends of England, the whistle goes and we are underway with the weekend's action!

Will we have a goal inside the first quarter-hour? How about two? Anything is possible with the amount of attacking talent running around the pitch today.

Can De Bruyne hit the mark again?

But one name missing from the teamsheet today in London of course is Grealish's fellow England star Mason Mount, who sits out today's clash through injury.

A cornerstone of recent Blues teams, under Frank Lampard and then Thomas Tuchel, he played a crucial role in last year's Champions League triump and Euro 2020 final run for club and country.

Quite how Chelsea will compensate for his absence remains to be seen, though they clearly have the depth to manage. But against Manchester City, will that be enough?

At the opposite end of the country, there's a battle for the ages brewing though - the prodigal son, made good on his return, against English football's most expensive man.

The price tag Jack Grealish commanded this summer looks to have made him a first-choice pick for Gareth Southgate and England now, and Pep Guardiola certainly is keeping him in the thick of things.

But even though he has delivered a stirring start, it's not quite on the level of Romelu Lukaku's return to Chelsea. The Belgian has made an electrifying kick-off to his second spell at Stamford Bridge - but can he strike gold early in the title race today too?

Ronaldo to lead Red Devils' roar?

Man Utd v Aston Villa

Talk about a bad week at the office for Manchester United. They left it late to snatch a win - a win they maybe didn't deserve - against West Ham in the Premier League last time out, before the Hammers condemned them to an early exit in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Cristiano Ronaldo was among a number of major stars rested as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's gamble backfired and the Portuguese superstar - who is certainly delivering the goals upon his return to the Red Devils - will be tasked with leading a quick turnaround against Aston Villa today.

The man knows how to deliver - and they'll hope he has more than one goal up his sleeve today.

Chelsea and Man City prepare for rematch

Chelsea v Man City

There are games that can define a sporting rivalry - and then there is last season's Champions League Final.

At the turn of the year, with Chelsea struggling in the Premier League and Frank Lampard's impending exit hanging in the air, few would have backed them against Manchester City in a straight fight for Europe's biggest prize.

But Thomas Tuchel has masterminded a major turnaround in fortunes since his arrival, with that success his crowning glory - and Pep Guardiola will be keen on a spot of revenge today.
