Ghana target Gideon Jung is set for a long spell on the sidelines after going under the knife on Monday to remedy an injury picked up in pre-season training at Hamburg.

The 23-year-old suffered an injury during practice, a setback that will keep him out of the first half of the Red Shorts' campaign in the German second division.

"HSV will have to do without Gideon Jung in the first few months of the Bundesliga 2 season," the club announced via their official website.

"The centre-back suffered cartilage damage to his left knee in pre-season training in Austria and he is set to be out for six months.

"This was the news from the UKE Athleticum medical team after they had done check-ups in the last few days."

The development comes few weeks after the utility man pledged his future to Hamburg despite their relegation to the second tier last season.

“It is really bad news," sports director Ralf Becker said.

"Gideon has become one of our key players and was a pillar of our plans for the upcoming season. We wish him all the best with the operation and for his recovery.

"We will be there for him and do everything we can to ensure he can get back onto the pitch as soon as possible."

Born to Ghanaian parents in Dusseldorf, Jung remains eligible to represent Ghana at senior level, having played for his country of birth at youth level.

In a related news, Hamburg youth star of Ghanaian parentage Aaron Opoku underwent surgery on Sunday after suffering tension pneumothorax.

According to the club, the 19-year-old "felt a sharp pain in his chest while warming up for the U21’s friendly last Sunday against FC Fredericia."
