WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
O'Neill enjoyed a breakout season during Sydney FC's incredible run to the Premiers Plate and Championship - playing in 27 of their 29 A-League games.
The 23-year-old operated as a deep-lying midfielder, performing defensive duties but also getting forward to score the first three senior goals of his career.
He was given a two-year contract extension in December 2016 after his impressive performances under Graham Arnold.
Born in Perth, O'Neill moved to the Sky Blues for the 2015-16 season after failing to establish himself at the Glory in the previous four campaigns - playing only 16 matches.
We can expect much of the same from O'Neill at A-League level as the Sky Blues seek to go back-to-back.
There were murmurings of O'Neill being considered for Socceroos selection during his good run of form last season and his goal will be to force his way into the World Cup squad - if Australia qualifies.
The issue is the national team are stacked in his position with Aaron Mooy, Mark Milligan, Mile Jedinak, Jackson Irvine and Massimo Luongo capable of playing deep midfield roles.
Russia may came a little soon but Jedinak and Milligan are both the wrong side of 30 so an opportunity may present itself in the next World Cup qualifying cycle if he continues to develop.
