The Glamour Boys have defenders who are more than capable of helping them challenge for honours, but they are just to relaxed and need competition

Kaizer Chiefs had the best defensive record in the league last season, but they look shaky this time around having conceded five goals in just three league matches.

What makes matters worse is the fact that the majority of those goals were given away cheapily; something that's unusual given how they raised the bar over the past few months.

Chiefs have collected just two points from first three games this season - their worst league start since the 2009/10 season under coach Vladimir Vermezovic, who guided them to a single point after three matches.

Itumeleng Khune, who walked away with the Goalkeeper of the Season award last term, is yet to keep a clean sheet which also a cause for a concern for a team that's eager to challenge to for trophies.

The biggest disappointment of Amakhosi's defence has been Daniel Cardoso, and the sooner Giovanni Solinas realises this the better.

Kaizer Chiefs, Daniel Cardoso

Cardoso was rock solid for Chiefs last season, and he could easily walked away with the Defender of the Season award, but he has been guilty of letting his teammates down on a number of occasionns.

Against Mamelodi Sundowns, Cardoso misjudged the ball in the air and dragged Jeremy Brockie down to give away a penalty, while against Bidvest Wits, he got turned in the middle of the pitch and allowed Gift Motupa to slot past Khune.

He then let the ball drop behind him before heading it into his own net against Baroka - three mistakes in three successive league matches - and surely this warrants a bench, although that may not be enough as the technical team may be tempted to field him along the way.

Chiefs need centre-back PS

There seems to be a lack of communication and trust between Cardoso and other defenders, which should raise alarm bells for Amakhosi to go into the market and get a proper and quality centre-back, especially now that Teenage Hadebe is injured.

Lorenzo Gordinho is a natural centre-back which Chiefs shouldn't have allowed to leave on loan, and their decision to send him to Bloemfontein Celtic is slowly backfiring, meaning they may have to buy a centre-back to solidify their back four.

While it's not too late for Chiefs to recall Gordinho from Phunya Sele Sele, it looks highly unlikely that the Bloemfontein-based outfit would agree to let him return to Naturena.

Perhaps it is for this reason Chiefs have set sights on luring Gor Mahia's Godfrey Walusimbi, although the Ugandan defender may need time to settle down should he end up joining the Soweto giants.
